This is being discussed on another thread -- i have posted the link -- but I am so angered by it that I am hoping by posting a thread with this title, others will weigh in and convince these deluded people that getting the shot now, if you are not in a high risk group AS DEFINED BY THE CDC, is wrong. There is not enough to go around right now, and the CDC has determined the groups that should go first. I am so disgusted by these people.
I am especially disturbed by the mom who had the nerve to be smug about it -- "what's done is done." I do believe, as a PP said, that there is special place in hell for people like that. http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/45/74964.page |

If a person goes to one of these vaccination clinics and legitimatey answers that he or she is NOT in one of the priority groups, but is nevertheless offered the vaccine, it is completely ethical to accept the vaccine.
It is the job of the clinic workers, and the system that has been organized, to be aware of the amount of vaccine available to cover the number of people who want it. Every single dose of available vaccine should be administered, every single day, at this point in time, for maximumum public health benefit. There more people who are vaccinated in a community, the quicker the vaccines are pushed out into the community, the sooner the epidemic will be slowed down or even halted. Given that no single indiviudal can be assured that vaccination will mean immunity from disease, everyone will benefit from a shorter epidemic period. If people in a high priority group are currently standing in line at a particular clinic, then no non-priority person should get the vaccine before them. However, if there isn't a line of waiting people, anyone who comes to a clinic should be vaccinated that day. The vaccine should not be held for the next day or week, in the hopes more priority group people show up. |
| What is the point of this thread if it's being discussed on another thread? Get a life, and calm down while you're at it... |
| Go away, OP. Find something legitimate to be pissed about. |
Agree completely |
| There will be a day of reckoning for people that cut in line to get shots ahead of those that need them. The ones that are telling you to shut up are the people abusing the system. They are also the same people getting shots ahead of disabled, pregnant, and young children. |
| No 20:22...you are wrong. Actually, I'm one of the prior posters and NO I did not get the shot and NO I am not abusing the system. I'm still trying to get my 6 month old teh seasonal flu shot. |
Actually, I agree with the previous posters that it was ethical for the person who got the shot because she was encouraged by a nurse. However, the nurse should have enforced the CDC high-priority groups. And just because that's my opinion doesn't mean I am abusing the system. In fact, today I took my 12-month-old child to get the shot. We waited in line for an hour at the pediatrician, and when they asked me if I was getting the shot too, I said 'no, I'm not in a high-risk group.' So I will have to go back and get the shot when it is available to me. If anything I feel grateful my child could get the shot, and I feel bad for those who need it and can't get it yet. |

OP, why don't you track down that Washington Post reporter that trolls the board for stories? Last I heard he was doing a story on Balloon Boy. The misinformation and total disregard for the CDC guidelines by health care workers AND parents would make for a great piece, and it is obvious that there needs to be some light shed on this issue in a very big way if there is going to be any chance of this situation improving over the next few weeks as more shots arrive.

Nope. I'm the 20:15 poster and pregnant myself. Haven't gotten my shot yet but hoping to soon.
Day of reckoning? This drama is just too much!! It's not like these people took the last vaccines on earth. Just be patient, people. |
You want a medal? |

From the looks of the arlington thread, there are MANY people who think the line-cutters are assholes. It's not just one or two of us.
The nurses and health care workers can't be expected to check every birth certificate, doctors note, etc. That would slow things WAAAAYY down. They are expecting adults to act like adults -- and for people to be considerate to babies, the disabled, and small children by declining the shot until those populations have been served. For some people, I guess that is too much to ask. |
What, like in "Left Behind"? The theatrics involved in the debate over this vaccine are astounding. Please calm down. |
No, as in karma. Lots of cultures believe in it. People that don't see a problem with actions like ones we are discussing usually don't. |
From what I read of the other thread the healthy adults that were vaccinated were actively telling the vaccination personnel that they didn't qualify as high-risk. And it sounded like at least most of them were parents of children under 2 who were turned away for the vaccine. It is one thing to get the vaccine to protect yourself - it is another thing to get the shot because it is the only way to assure that your own young child (who is high risk unless and until he or she can get the shot) is protected. Some have said that vaccines are available for under 2 in other places, but I can't imagine that these parents knew that when they were standing there being told the vaccine wasn't available for their child. And residency may or may not be an issue - most reports say it doesn't matter but there is definitely conflicting info out there. |
