Moms who are NOT HIGH RISK getting the H1N1 shot ahead of high risk people

FYI - I heard on the news last night that you aren't supposed to travel out of your own state to obtain the vaccine. The Federal Government allocated the shots to the states based on population.

From the H1N1 chat on WP.com today, health official is Dr. Pierre Vigilance, director of Public Health for the District of Columbia.

Washington, DC: There have been issues raised that some non-priority adults have been able to receive the vaccine, by the urging of the clinic staff. Is it up to the clinic to make that call?

Dr. Pierre Vigilance: Clinic staff have been instructed to restrict vaccinations to youth (6 months - 24 years old), and expectant mothers. We want to ensure that these groups have access to vaccine now, and will continue to communicate this to those who come to our clinics. We appreciate the patience and understanding of those who are not in the priority groups.

I think you need to let this rest now. Lord knows I agree with you, but nothing anyone says or does on this message board is going to change the fact that some people not in the high risk groups received vaccinations and that health care workers urged people to get shots when they really should have been more concerned about saving them for the high risk people.

If you look carefully at the wording of the response, it seems like he is dancing around the issue. I think the health care workers can not legally turn anyone away. That means some people are going to take advantage and not wait their turn. But the vast majority of people are following the guidance. You just need to let it go.

I think the post of the WP Q&A session provides us all with a clear direction. Even the director of Public Health is asking clinics administer shots to only the high priority group. Some people may have been unclear on whether or not they should receive the shot, even under the guidance of health care workers at the clinics. The health care workers may have been misinformed, thus misleading the general public. It may be true that the health care workers cannot legally turn anyone away, but I think there are some people who would have turned down the vaccine, if they knew "the facts." Now we know, even the health care workers are being asked to administer to "high risk" group first.

i took my son to a DC clinic to get him vaccinated. however, there was hardly anyone there, and i got an exemption from the workers there for a shot for myself (my son is 9 months old). i would have been totally fine with not getting vaccinated, however i asked and got the OK since there was NOBODY THERE. there was plenty of vaccine available for the priority groups, but they just weren't showing up. so i'm totally at peace with it.

moral of the story: if you want to get your kid vaccinated, GO TO THE FRIGGIN CLINIC and get a vaccine. There is still plenty of vaccine available to your kid if you are a DC resident.

11:05 here -- should qualify that I got the exemption based on the fact that I am the primary caregiver to my son, who, although 9 months old, is still a small infant and in daycare. it was not just a "oh, there's nobody here" kind of thing. it was discussed among the health care staff there who decided to give me the exemption based on what i just discussed and because there was still plenty of vaccine left at that facility.

I do have to say...I also am frustrated with my fellow working mom friends b*thcng about this...when I stood in line with my infant Saturday morning and got him the shot...and they didn't even attempt to go to a single clinic over the weekend...and as far as I know--not only did most of those places NOT run out of vaccine..the lines were next to nothing by mid-late afternoon. Get your priorities straight before you are allowed to complain. Trust me standing in line on a weekend mornign was the last thing I wanted to do with an 18 month old--but I did and he's been vaccinated.

What exactly are you complaining about? Maybe your working mom friends were unable to take time off of work last week. Some jobs just aren't that flexible, especially in this economy. Or maybe they aren't as freaked out about the flu as some. Or maybe they felt their families didn't have any underlying health conditions that warranted a frenzied search for the vaccine last week. Maybe they heard stories of people going to clinics like Arlington and being turned away because of the lack of communication about what vaccines were available and for what age groups. There are a million reasons for people to not have gotten vaccinated last week, and you come out with "get our priorities straight?" I'm surprised you have any friends left with an attitude like that.

OMG these threads are so funny. One life is no more important than another what hypcrites. There will be PLENTY of this vaccine to go around. Seriously, go find something to do.

Says the woman who cheated the system and got her vaccine out of turn.

What a loser. I have three kids ( under 6) and NONE of us are getting this "vaccine" So, please take ours. You are paranoid and hysterical. You nuts are posting about people "stealing" your vaccine???? I hope you are able to look back at these posts in a few months to see how idiotic you sound. Try not to catch anything while waiting hours in a crowded, enclosed space.

OMG--are you really out there? Me, too, poster. When I tell people we are leaning toward not getting it, they look at me like I am insane. People have gone absolutely overboard with fear.

If you aren't worried about the flu and you aren't getting the vaccine, why in the world are you spending your time in the flu forum??

The posters were expressing their thought about the flu vaccine on the FLU FORUM. Aside from the fact that their views are different than some others, what is the problem with them posting on this forum?

The posters that are jumping into this particular thread to say "OMG you are all so crazy! You are nuts! We don't even care about the flu" are just looking to start drama. They are troublemakers. If they want to have a discussion about the merits of getting the vaccine, there are multiple threads on FLU FORUM where they can debate their views like mature adults. But apparently they aren't mature adults and would rather resort to name calling and stirring up drama.

I don't agree with the name calling, but asking them to get off the flu forum wasn't nice either. THis particular thread is dramatic and controversial. The people that think vaccines are overrated are not the only troublemakers. It goes both ways.

Who asked them to get off the flu forum? I think asking someone why they are reading a thread that they don't have anything to contribute to is reasonable. There is a difference between saying "What are you doing here?" and "go away." No one told them to go away.
