South Arlington parents are going to need to mobilize if they want their interests represented.

Mobilize for what though? AH is happening. What is in our interest AND politically doable? More choice school options?

Choice schools

Try this one for Kinlay

I might vote for Kinlay just to throw a wrench into the mix.

Well, okay. But maybe watch this first before you pull that lever (Civ Fed debate, SB candidates start around 46:35):

Yikes. I just watched the clip of Kinlay in action. It was reminiscent of those horribly botched answers in pageants. I think I'll pass on Kinlay.

Omg .... Yes, definitely.

I think at this point, and I've written this before - hate to be a broken record- we need assurances for choice school placement for the current and future students in south Arlington.

Ha that depends; look at Arl.now - "voice" has been knocking on doors in certain areas all day during work hours to get people to vote - they said that, since the overall turnout will be so low (15%!) , if they can get an additional 5% to vote, that's all they need. Looks like it worked!

But McM. really did not have the campaign that JV had...

There wasn't a wedge issue. Most of the county is on board with what they believe is a very good AH plan.

They think it benefits the middle class and county workers.

By the time you educate people on what is happening, the ship has sailed.

This is why I didn't want to go to CARD's protest in September. If there had been a lot of people going, I would have done it, but I didn't want to be perceived as a racist or something.

Also, why can't we help lower-income families by creating something even more stable, like affordable homes they could buy? That way, you get people who are committed to living in Arlington, who would purchase affordable units and have ownership. I thought I read somewhere that that is even better than just cramming in tenements all over the place.

Hopefully, Dorsey and Cristol will listen to the people the represent and we can have a rational amount of AHs.

At some point we have to put ourselves out there.
I believe the Pike is gentrifying to some degree, but if they continue on this current path, the schools are still
Going to tank real estate.
I'm genuinely concerned for my property value.

There's no way to do that at the scale necessary to help middle and lower income families. Land is too expensive ($350K for the cheapest buildable lot in Arlington), so starter homes = condos. Individual people can't build condo buildings. A decade ago Habitat built a few small multifamily buildings, but creating 8 townhouses doesn't make a dent in the demand. There is no reason for anyone to buy the land and do all the work to build a building and not sell them for market rate. And there's no reason for government to subsidize OWNERSHIP by making up the difference between an affordable price and the market price -- to the extent public money is being used to support housing, it will go farther in subsidizing rent for lots of families.

^^^ it sucks, but that is true. The math just doesn't work in favor of low income home ownership.
Developers build what makes them money.

Besides- I don't think 350k will even get you a lot in nauck anymore.
I believe tear downs are in the 400k's now.

I have heard that part of 4 mile run that is county owned is being targeted for more 100's CAF high rises.
Is this true?
Where exactly are they referring? Over by the Britney and Carlton condo buildings?

Totally hearsay/ rumour but I've seen it mentioned a couple of different times .

Then maybe Arlington is too small space wise the solve America's ills. What's the answer then? I want to help people, but I have to be real - I care about my family too and all that we sacrificed to live in Arlington. Maybe the number of CAFs is too high for such a small space? It's ambitious, but maybe too much?

It's likely a developer will swoop I with cash and put up a 875k home on those spots. Not doable for middle class.

There was a burned out house near Hoffman-Boston that was on the market for years, and even that has been snapped up, likely for a new house, as it was condemned.

Funny. Americans are so worried about being politically correct.

Yeah- it's fucking hilarious that we we've made substantial investments in our communities, but our voices don't count. Laugh riot.
