Why is McLean so prestigious?

Anonymous
I think it’s a generational thing. My in laws think McLean is super elite. But everyone I know that has moved there in the past 5 years are people who left North Arlington and Bethesda because they couldn’t get a similar sized lot at the price they could in McLean.

There are many areas with more prestige than McLean- Kalorama, Forest Hills, Kent, Chevy Chase, Georgetown.

McLean has the VIPs and the most expensive suburban homes in the DC area along with Chevy Chase. Hate to break that to you.

In any case, you tip your hand by suggesting only one place in the region can be “prestigious.” You must spend a lot of time looking over your shoulder.

Bethesda is more expensive and prestigious IMO.

McLean is more expensive; prestige is in the eye of the beholder.

Would you say Loudoun county is prestigious?

Depends where. Ashburn, no. Middleburg, yes.

What makes Middleburg prestigious?

Rich people

What makes Middleburg prestigious?

Rich people

Generational wealth. Horse country.
People who didn't have to worry or even think about a commute, before "remote" work became a thing.

A mall? Government officials?

Literally nothing on this list would make it “prestigious”.

As someone who has lived in multiple areas of MoCo and NoVa this is my best analogy for prestige and also for the general culture, demographics, and feel of each area.

I think Potomac = great falls, Bethesda = McLean, Silver Spring is lower than Arlington

Yup.

The top government officials, diplomats, military officers, members of Congress, Justices on the Supreme Court, the Kennedy family, etc. The fact that Tysons has become the pre-eminent suburban shopping area in the DC region when other malls like White Flint crashed and ended up demolished isn't irrelevant, either.

You're wasting your time whining about how it's not a prestigious suburb. It absolutely is.

It's really just South Arlington that's similar to Silver Spring. North Arlington is more like Bethesda, or at least the older sections of Bethesda with small lots.

Arlington is more Chevy Chase -DC since it used to part of DC. McLean is a mix of Chevy Chase MD and Bethesda. I agree about Great Falls and Potomac.

McLean is the third wealthiest city in the United States. People who can afford it move there for the excellent public schools and location to Maryland, Tysons and D.C.

Nobody cares about proximity to Maryland. That is not a plus.

Your opinion is irrelevant. Facts and home prices dictate that McLean is more expensive.

Expensive doesn't mean prestigious.
No one in their right mind would think that McLean is as prestigious as Bethesda.

Could you possibly be any more delusional? JFC.

Vienna is what? "North Potomac?" "North Bethesda?"
