I am rewatching dexter and amazed at the acting. Not sure if the casting was surprising but the acting sure is amazing.

didn't she produce this movie? So she cast herself. She is wonderful though, so funny.

I don't know if Melissa produced it, but Julianne Moore was originally cast and dropped out.

Interesting. Moore is a great actress, but, yes McCarthy just inhabits that role so perfectly. Of course, she had quite an assist from Richard Grant.

Julianne Moore didn't drop out-- she was fired!

Always good when the quality assessor turns up on a thread. What a fricking kill-joy you always are.

Well, there has to be one on every thread. I’m pretty sure that’s a rule in the DCUM internet user agreement.

Oh come on. What is the point of starting a topic of "surprisingly good Hollywood casting decisions!" if people are going to answer stuff like "Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins!" As if everyone was shocked that Julie Andrews could play that role.

Exactly. The surprising casting example would be Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria -- though she was directed by, and presumably cast by, her husband Blake Edwards.

+2. I mean, yes, Reese Witherspoon was good in Legally Blonde but what is surprising about casting her there?

Ok, I have one-Michael Keaton as Batman

People had a fit when he was first cast, but damn, was he good

Casey Affleck in Gone Baby Gone. I thought he was too young for the role (based on the book character) and I was skeptical of Ben casting his brother but he was very good.

Rowdy Roddy Piper in They Live!
Dolly Parton in 9 to 5
Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan the Barbarian
John Denver in Oh God!

Recently I saw some resurfaced article about the casting of Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston in Thor as "Marvel gambles on unknowns". Chris Evans was somewhat controversial because he mostly had played in teen movies (and a cheesy Johnny Storm). Downey was considered a gamble because of his history with substance abuse.

They're iconic now but the original Avengers weren't slam dunks at the time.

I read somewhere that Bruce Willis was mostly known for Rom Coms when he was cast in the original Die Hard.
