Compacted Math- FYI

Anonymous
I have a 4th grader doing well in compacted math, spring MAP score 237 and I’d actually be fine if he didn’t move on to 5/6 next year. They missed 40% of the curriculum and those gaps will definitely start to show as they do more advanced math.

I hate how MCPS admin just tries to sneak things through. As soon as they and the BOE started hearing from parents that eliminating enrichment was not ok with them, they kicked the can down the road to do more exploration. And here we are again; another bad idea another strict cut-off when that's not a legitimate approach.

Parents, you have to start complaining again. Write to the BOE. Don't wait.

Also, please don't lash out at school admin and teachers. We merely deliver the crap that is sent downhill to us. Nobody at central gives a flying *** what we think about these changes.

Is there anything official we can cite in making complaints? Has anything come out in writing that you can share with us for us to point to in emailing the BOE?

Where's Carolynn Peetz when you need her. I don't think this is a story if an incompetent or slow central office. I think this is a story of a central office that knows it is making unpopular decisions and is making a strategic effort to announce over the summer after a difficult pandemic year when the parents are tubed out. Shameful, and not a great way for the Acting Superintendent to garner public support. I might think someone is trying to sabotage her with this type of behavior.

They all know what's up. When you say you read information posted on DCUM, it gets attention.

Get enrichment, acceleration and skill building in Math and ELA outside of the school. Just like many middle class college educated parents do. Invest time, resources and energy in this endeavor.

Private schools are just as bad. Parents need to be hands on in this country. K-12 education is very low.

251 makes no sense. My older kids in advanced math (one of whom did math competitions) didn’t hit 251 until middle school Algebra.
If they are worried, they should just give a placement test over the summer to see who has got the concepts from 4th grade and start of 5th down.

Could 251 be a typo for 215? 251 is an odd ball number to pick.

My 4th grade CES kid could just maybe eek out a 251 this spring. He had a 240 in the fall. It would be a shame if he didn't get it-- this is a kid who learned multiplication on his own at 4. No social skills....but great at math

Done.

Last time I complained to the Board, they had my school principal call me rather than address the concerns. They are useless.

Just checked my older kids MAPs histories, and it looks like 251 is 99% for a 6th grader. My older kid had a Fall 4th grade MAP-M of 233, which was reported as 99% for the Fall 4th grader.
I think a 215 would be more like 90-92 percentile.

Since MAP measures exposure to concepts, it seems like it should be easy to find a cut-off number that indicates mastery of the 4th grade concepts and the first quarter 5th grade concepts (since they are supposed to go through first semester 5th grade in 4th grade, right?).

That’s above 99% — a reach score indeed!

It’s ridiculous my kid in the TPMS magnet who is breezing through with all As didn’t even get that high in fifth grade, let alone third.

There are strict guidelines coming from the county level and principals are not allowed around it. These include MAP scores and scores from performance matters testing. It sounds like around 30 total kids countywide will move on.

Compacted 4/5 will be decided on the county level. Don't expect many to get in.

At our school they said this isn't the case and classes will be the same as previous years.
