Compacted Math- FYI

Ridiculous. Compacted math is very easy. One of my children was bored to tears by it in 5th grade. I doubt what you heard is true, OP - lots of angry parents are going to push for their kids to get at least that much.

You are incorrect. Although plenty of kids are not having a hard time in COmpacted 4/5, the guidance will not allow them to move forward.

So 30 kids countywide and no acceleration in regular math? This is absurd.

Hint: this is how MCPS will get rid of accelerated math. It's happening in California and Virginia (though I heard the VA BOE backtracked somewhat) all for equity. It's becoming clearer by the day...if you want your kids to get a equitable education, MCPS is the place for you. If you want them to get an excellent education, you'll have to go private.

My suspicion is this as well. Are there any changes being made at middle school level?

That’s above 99% — a reach score indeed!

Bingo! Was just realizing same thing.

The meeting and guidance is countywide and I think the instruction might be virtual, though I don't know. Most schools will not have any kids in the class. Really, for the kids to score as high as required, they would need to be in the CES so it might be limited to a small group in those schools.

CES is by lottery so there are lots of people who are qualified and aren't in. More to the point.... CES doesn't look at math at all, only ELA.

That's insane. It's pretty clear that there are more than 30 kids county-wide who are qualified for the program. This is just lip-service so they can pretend they are offering leveled instruction when they are not. So very MCPS.

Is that for current grade 3 students or current grade 4 students?

Can you imagine how DCUM will explode when the 30 people are notified..

A 251 is literally off the chart for Spring MAP-M score for 4th grade. https://teach.mapnwea.org/impl/NormsTables.pdf (see page 22; 99th percentile for 4th grade is 247). If this is really the case, they are effectively getting rid of it and (shocker!) have not been making statements about the future of compacted math in good faith.

30 kids in all of MCPS? How would that work logistically, and what is the point?

Equity is the point. Is everyone starting to understand now?

Yup

Wow. Are they going to bus those 30 little Einsteins somewhere through the rest of their remaining years at MCPS? How will that be logistically possible?

If the numbers are small enough the guidance mentioned a virtual option. I'm assuming they would log onto Zoom while the rest of the class does the grade-level math curriculum. I'm hoping each school will be able to do an in-person class. Virtual would be a disaster.

I could see maybe making changes for next years 4th graders but crazy to re-evaluate this years 4th graders part way through.

Yes, if anybody knows about MS level math please post it (or start a new thread).

This thread discusses a possible new math pathway in MS. I don't know what the final consensus is.

One option MCPS was considering, was to get rid of AIM6 so everybody would be in Algebra 8th grade year. If you wanted to "accelerate" your kid could double up geometry and algebra II in 9th grade.
