It is a marriage that should not have happened in the first place, and that people pretend that every divorce is sad, and that marriage must have been a good idea for a couple in love in the first place, is part of the bad culture we have around this topic.

I'm sorry they're sad, and yes, someone who says he began drinking at age 13 in order to receive attention is someone with serious childhood trauma and I geniunely wish him the very best with his recovery.

You are really hitting hyperbole with”serious childhood trauma”. He says he was funny and then he wasn’t, but drinking made him funny before. That doesn’t sound like he was traumatized. Just lacking confidence and unfortunately, predisposed to addiction.

You're right, silly me. Taking up heavy drinking at 13 with the specific goal of receiving attention is one of those run of the mill tween things.

It doesn’t have to be typical, but let’s not pretend it doesn’t happen. It’s what he said happened. Until he changes his account, why not accept that he probably isn’t hiding a childhood priest rape story or some other dark trauma.

Jerry Seinfeld? He is super-neurotic though.

In the industry, the one exception is Will Ferrell. John Mulaney is not an exception. He probably should not be onstage yet. I do wish him well. Addiction is a mountain you climb everyday.

I am not familiar with his history but why is Will Ferrell an exception?

Dp- also John’s humor isn’t bitter or angry.
I’m not sure what the above poster is talking about.

He seems very self-depreciating to me, not bitter or angry.

self depreciation is typically used as a defense mechanism, to cover up self-hatred (anger at self instead of others)

Yes, but some people also find it a kinder humor than attacking others.

ohh 100% agree! i am just highlighting that self-depreciating humor is still coming from a "mocking place of bitter hurt" it is just directed at themselves instead of others, more palatable for sure, but still based on sadness/angry/negative feelings

Isn’t he on the spectrum?

Nooooo I won’t be able to enjoy his comedy anymore if I know he left his wife for another woman, I get so bugged when people do that.

Same, PP! Ugh!!

I can't believe this would be the planned roll-out, to announce a divorce and dating with a single week? Like why not wait? Also, I don't know ~anything~ about sobriety/recovery but it feels like you'd want some stability when re-integrating into real life, which dating while divorcing does not seem to match with.

They met at church. 😂

I can see how you could find Mulaney charming, but what’s wrong with Olivia Munn? “You’re an alcoholic and a coke addict who had a recent relapse and in the midst of filing for divorce? Sign me up!”

Ditto, but I’m extra bothered that it’s Olivia Munn. Have some self-respect.

Thanks for putting up with his addictions, but you're redundant now Anna!
