I really like Jawando. What makes him a "jerk" to you? |
PP is a cop. |
No, those are the results for the Democratic primary. For the general election: 2010 (first term): 59.4% against the omnipresent Robin Ficker (40.5%) 2014 (second term): 59.5% against Dick Jurgena (40.4%) 2018 (third term): 71.1% against Ed Amatetti (28.8%) I oppose term limits, but given that we have term limits, I'm very glad that this is Craig Rice's last term. He intones, he empathizes, he shows his concern, and he does nothing. |
I don't *want* to vote for Flickr, but I'd have to pick him over Elrich or Jawando if Flickr ran. Where he hell are all the moderates? |
NP. I don't think Jawando is a jerk, but the reason I will never vote for him is that prior to him being a candidate for council, he filed a civil right complaint against MCPS because HE WAS NOT AWARE THAT THERE WAS A LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM. Think about that. And then think about that once he was on the council, I don't think he has proposed anything regarding making the immersion program more "equitable". |
Putting a lie in all caps does not make it true. The complaint was about MCPD not publicizing language immersion programs to Black and Latino students. Civil rights complaint alleges inequity in schools’ language immersion programs - The Washington Post https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/civil-rights-complaint-alleges-discrimination-in-language-immersion-programs/2016/06/23/43ba2670-3864-11e6-9ccd-d6005beac8b3_story.html What I am hearing is you REALLY dislike the idea of equity. |
MCPD, not MCPD |
Ugh autocorrect |
Why? Jawa do is awesome and a huge advocate for equity, unlike the lip service from Elrich. |
And he came to that conclusion how? Because he wasn't aware of the program himself. And then when he did enter the lottery, his kid did not get in. But my point has nothing to do with equity. If anything, equity seems to be MCPS's #1 priority. But you would think that someone running for county council would know enough about the county to be aware that the school system has a language immersion program. At a certain point, your ignorance is no one's fault but your own. "Jawando said in an interview that he and his wife only heard about the district’s language-immersion programs through a chance conversation at their daughter’s soccer game a few days before the application deadline in April. The couple rushed to meet the deadline, wanting their daughter to become bilingual as early as possible. Jawando said in his complaint that research links language learning to higher academic achievement. Their local school in Silver Spring — Cannon Road Elementary — does not offer foreign language classes. But their daughter was not selected for the Spanish immersion program at Rock Creek Forest Elementary, a school where the district’s report said more than 45 percent of 2013-2014 immersion applicants were siblings. Jawando appealed the decision to school officials in May but has not heard back. He said he filed the complaint this week with the Office for Civil Rights because he believes the issue reaches well beyond his family’s experience." |
Also, maybe he really did care so much about equity in the immersion program that he would have filed the complaint even if his kid did get in. But now that he is on the council, what has he done to raise awareness about the immersion program or to make it more equitable, since he seems to care about it so much beyond his own kid not getting in? |
I like him as a person, he is nice and very charismatic but I don’t agree with his politics. I would like Blair and Elrich in a pinch. |
You sound really upset about something that doesn't sound even remotely worth being upset about. He noticed a problem (years before he ran for Country Council, so that was a lie too) in how the immersion programs were publicized, that affected his family. Maybe MCPS improved its efforts. You're just looking for something to pick on. |
| The whole point of elected officials living in the jurisdictions where they serve is so they understand and experience the issues that their constituents do. The idea that experiencing a problem - ie not being aware of an immersion program that wasn't publicized to you - is somehow damning is just absurd. You just don't like it when Black people bring attention to the issues that affect them. |
| Pretty clear that the pro Blair group here is that "omg equity I hate it" crowd |
