“That’s my dogs name”

Really? I have a Charlie who is 5 and no one has ever said that to me. Not that I would be offended, but it just doesn't seem common.

Mine is 16, so maybe the Charlie pets have departed this world! It definitely happened more when he was younger.

OMG, people need to get over themselves.

It's still a free country, you can name your dog or your child whatever you want, regardless of how many dogs or children with that name already exist.

This is a very minor thing, but I have been wondering if I offended an acquaintance in a recent conversation. She shared the name of her youngest child to me and I casually mentioned that I love that name and that it is also our dogs name.

It felt like the tone of the conversation immediately changed and that I may have offended her? It is rude to tell someone that their child and your dog share a name? Ordinarily, I would never think twice about this because it seems like no big deal... but her response made me think of twice. She is the mom of my DDs classmate. I know this is nothing to apologize for, but I’m curious what others think about this?

Some people get offended. We had a dog named Maggie, met a couple with a DD named Maggie, and we changed the dog's name. From that point on I have never considered a name for a pet that is likely to be the name of one of my child's classmates.

I'd rather have a friend name their kid the same name, but a dog feels insulting.

I actually sort of hate it when people use common names for their animals in general. Lets keep it to Sparky and Snowflake.

You are officially absurd. I am moving you to the bottom of the covid vaccine priority list.

You must be lost, this is a forum for parents of human children. Also lol at dog mom.

Why would you assume that I don’t have human children?

No normal mother of human children would refer to themselves as a dog mom.

I have both human children and a dog, and I don't think it is odd at all to say "dog mom."

At the vet, they address me as "Tillie's mom." The neighborhood children, who love to play with Tillie, call me "Tillie's mom."

I am both "Tillie's mom" and "Larla and Larlo's mom."

This is so funny to me, because DH-- let's call him Larlo-- has a story about this from childhood. He met a kid with a name that is definitely a person name, but more likely to be a pet's name (think "Ginger").

And he said, "HEY MY DOG'S NAME IS GINGER."

And Ginger said, "That's funny, my dog's name is Larlo."

Obviously the kid had heard it before.

OP, I think what you see here is that some folks will be uncomfortable with it, for reasons described. Some people won't care, or will find it funny, but I think considering a fair number find it rude-- and their thought process is at least understandable-- it's better to refrain.

Sorry but dog mom is weird and I would think a mom to humans would know why.

I’d love to hear your definition of normal.
I have 2 human kids and 1 dog. I am a dog mom and a human mom.
Happy to be whatever you consider abnormal!

You changed your dogs name?? Now that's extreme.

My friend has a border collie named the same (no red coat though). The only thing that's irritating is she spells it Rhuby. Might have started as Rhubarb though.

I wouldn't be offended--it would be proof they really do love the name and aren't patronizing me or simply being polite.

I agree. You're an owner, not a mom, to a dog. OP: I would definitely not say it righ off the bat--but it sounds like you just spoke up impulsively. Next time, just try at least to think of your delivery.

This is crazy. My dog's name is Maggie. I would never chang her name must because I met another couple whose kid has that name. I had to read it a few times to be sure I was reading it right. Why did you change the name?

I have friends who considered it the highest imaginable honor when I named my cats for their daughters. But then we are all kind of cat crazy, so...

I wouldn’t like you I think. My dogs have been Keith, John, and Craig.
