“That’s my dogs name”

+1.

+2 Of course it's rude. You love your dog, OP, but most people don't take "your kid is just like my dog" as a compliment.

Really? I have a Charlie who is 5 and no one has ever said that to me. Not that I would be offended, but it just doesn't seem common.

The difference is that Charlie is obviously a human name. Ruby, on the other hand, sounds more like a dog's name. That's why the woman was offended.

Ridiculous. I've never met a dog named Ruby, I know several little girls named Ruby. In any case, no species, human or canine, has dominion over this or any other name. That's why my two year old son is named Fido.

We are part of a bigger friend group, so it's not like my kid will see this dog a lot. But it's still really irritating to me. I'd rather have a friend name their kid the same name, but a dog feels insulting.

I actually sort of hate it when people use common names for their animals in general. Lets keep it to Sparky and Snowflake.

You are officially absurd. I am moving you to the bottom of the covid vaccine priority list.

I get what you are saying, but the way the conversation went down was different than that. We were talking about our children and she shared with me that they named their youngest Ruby because they love old fashioned names. We were actively talking about the name in question so it felt natural to share my own experience/love with that name? I didn’t realize it would steal her thunder.

Wow I can’t imagine being offended by this. I’ve made this comment to people before as I have two dogs with “human” names. Guess I will stop now—I never meant it rudely!

It happens more often than you think.

When new next door neighbors moved in years ago, I realized their dog shared a commonly used 1960's female name with our then-nanny. Neither she or DS ever mentioned it to me.

Before we were parents, we got a kitten and named him after a player on the Orioles (not Cal). I recall friends telling me, "that is a cute name -- why not save it for your future kid?" Years later DS met a classmate friend with same name as our cat! He came home from school and said, "mom, I have a new friend. He has a cat's name - can you believe it?" I told him our cat's name was actually a person-name. He had never thought of it as a person's name.

You didn’t steal her thunder.

You were rude and obnoxious.

There’s a difference.

This is neither clever nor funny. People are dying. Let's not go there.

My youngest has the same name as the dog who lives In the apartment upstairs.

From the age of two on she would state in a very matter of fact Manner “I am Larla the Human . That Is Larla the dog.”

Was anyone in our family deeply offended? No. Would I prefer that she not share a name with religious and family significance with the neighbor’s dog? Yes.

Just as we had the right to name our daughter, our neighbor had the right to name her dog. End of story.

Dp. What if they ask you directly what your dog's name is? Sorry but you people are too much!
