Muriel Bowser

It wasn't until the day of when things got out of hand that she started to try to pull in the Guard (but they weren't ready because they hadn't been appropriately requested) and MPD.

Agree that when MPD did arrive, they were incredibly brave and prevented the Capitol from completely falling.

But she -- like Sund, the Sergeants at Arms, and others, was part of a royal screw-up. You would think that as a Black woman she would have been more on guard, but she wasn't.

Can you elaborate on that little gem please?

DP: Maybe after what she let happen during the BLM protests and riots she would be more sensitive to more rioting?

As has been pointed out many times in this thread, there was no rioting in the parts of the city under Bowser's control. Bowser apparently decided that MPD rather than federal services could best handle things. Given that it was MPD that had to bail out the Capitol Police, she appears to have been correct.

What I do fault Bowser for is how she seems totally fine with the disparate treatment MPD afforded these insurrectionist who broke curfew versus BLM protestors who broke curfew. MPD were merciless to the point of national embarrassment for the latter. For the former, just a few dozen arrests and very quick releases.

Well, they "had to bail out the Capitol Police" b/cause no NG were available. And Bowser may be part of that decision making is PPs point I believe.

OMG, yes, it was her decision to order the number of NG troops she needed for HER PART of the security responsibility. It is not effective in any way for her to try to do contingency planning for FEDERAL spaces on the off chance that one of the police services will completely abdicate their responsibilities and refuse other assistance from FEDERAL partners who offer. She could not have anticipated that Trump and Giuliani were going to order people to leave the ellipse and go to war on the Capitol building, and that Capitol Police had no cordon, no plan and minimal staffing.

With something like 13 different police services in DC, there are VERY CLEAR lines of responsibility that are determined ahead of time. If you lived here, you might know this already.

Just to be clear, whether the PP thought that or not, it is not true. Bowser has no responsibility for nor authority over federal properties.

Bowser can't call out the National Guard. Since we are not a state, she has no authority to to that. It has to be okay'd by the white house. Pence is the one who finally agreed to the use of the National Guard, not Trump.

She does over having National Guard readied and prepped though, like they were yesterday.

Inauguration security is coordinated by the Secret Service. You really seem to have no idea how any of this works.

No she doesn't. She can put in a request, but it has to be ok'd by the feds.

She has new authority since Jan 6, but before that date she could only make a request to the Army.

What do you mean "only"? She could make a request, and her request was approved. That's authority. What do you need to feel like she has authority, chomping on a cigar and sticking pins in a map??

Having to ask permission from someone means you do not have authority. Words have meaning.

It is a formality!
