OP here - thanks; I might do that, not only because of the schools, but also because of the commute and I know and like the area.

Those are good reasons.

"Because the average standardized test scores at the school are high" is not.

How on this planet can this not be a good reason to choose a school (amongst other reasons)? Who in their right mind is going to pick a school with terrible scores over a school with high scores? The PC has filtered down into a monumental swamp of BS with some of you people.

Please explain what difference this makes to a given child and their education.

Sweetheart if you need high scores explaining to you, you're in the wrong place.

No one just hangs around on the green space. All 3 high schools have the same sports and sufficient fields for them. Op, I agree with pp who said as a single parent, I’d prioritize metro access since when your kids are older it will give you some flexibility to get them to and from their activities. My kids are at Whitman but I wish we had bought in BCC for that reason.

OP here; thanks, but what about the MS/ Westland? Someone just commented how bad it is.

Westland is good (and has lots of green space behind it!). But also note that half the BCC students come from Silver Creek MS which is new and terrific. The plus of this is that neither Westland not Silver Creek is overcrowded, which many schools in mcps are. Middle school years are tough so you will read complaints about most of them- in fact lots of posters are negative about Pyle as well.

Sad to say but this county is not what it once was and never will be again.

MCPS was never that great. People keep acting like it was but it was always a big factory.

Actually MCPS is better now and more diverse

more diverse yes, better ro, instead of bringing up the lower performing ahools they are bringing down the better performing schools. It's easier and less work for them.

OP here - thank you for the input. Actually, I like the look of Westland; it seems friendly and is not far out. Not sure how strong the school is though from what I have been hearing.

We had a good (or good enough) experience at Westland. I think middle schools just get the worst reviews generally.

Do you understand what an average is? It's simple plenty of kids at all these schools score well, but when a few do not it lowers the average. At the high-school level this has almost no impact because kids who are academically inclined don't take classes with those who aren't.

The average FARMS rate in MCPS is something like 35% but many of these schools have a 5%- 10% rate because of their gerrymandered boundaries. This will likely change when the boundary analysis is complete.

If we're going by objective measures like SAT scores as an indicator, MCPS is much better today than 30 years ago.

+1 that seems to be the case in general across the board.

Yes, I can see how these high-schools stack up by looking at SAT averages the county released for similar SES cohorts. The data is available from MCPS at the link below, but the short-list is:

Blair 1326
Walter Johnson 1275
Wooton 1262
Poolesville 1259
Churchill 1257

cohort and teaching?

No, not teaching.

And every MCPS high school has a cohort of motivated, academically-minded students.

So that leaves...?

People who want to convince you this matters to prop up their real estate values.
