BCC vs. W. Whitman and W. Churchill

Perhaps they're worried they have an "average" kid and don't really understand stats.

No one just hangs around on the green space. All 3 high schools have the same sports and sufficient fields for them. Op, I agree with pp who said as a single parent, I’d prioritize metro access since when your kids are older it will give you some flexibility to get them to and from their activities. My kids are at Whitman but I wish we had bought in BCC for that reason.

OP here; thanks, but what about the MS/ Westland? Someone just commented how bad it is.

Westland is good (and has lots of green space behind it!). But also note that half the BCC students come from Silver Creek MS which is new and terrific. The plus of this is that neither Westland not Silver Creek is overcrowded, which many schools in mcps are. Middle school years are tough so you will read complaints about most of them- in fact lots of posters are negative about Pyle as well.

OP here - thank you for the input. Actually, I like the look of Westland; it seems friendly and is not far out. Not sure how strong the school is though from what I have been hearing.

You are kidding yourself if you think Westland is more than miniscule-ly better than Pyle or whatever the WJ middle school is. And I say that with kids who recently went through Pyle. MCPS curriculm is basically the same in all schools. There are small differences in offerings but one school may have one offerings not all middle schools do, and vice versa. I have a strong belief that most who say negative things about Westland are doing so for gross reasons unrelated to the school and I’ll leave it at that.

No. I think you just agree with yourself and it is very likely you don't even have school-aged children.

I could say, "And I think you have never participated in a public meeting in Montgomery County." See how that works?

Alternatively, there are people in Montgomery County, with children in MCPS, whose opinions differ from yours. I think that's the explanation that's actually valid.

Bingo. Keep me away from those lunatics! There's not enough money in the world to get me to attend one of those side-shows.

OP here - thanks; I might do that, not only because of the schools, but also because of the commute and I know and like the area.

Those are good reasons.

"Because the average standardized test scores at the school are high" is not.

How on this planet can this not be a good reason to choose a school (amongst other reasons)? Who in their right mind is going to pick a school with terrible scores over a school with high scores? The PC has filtered down into a monumental swamp of BS with some of you people.

Please explain what difference this makes to a given child and their education.

Sweetheart if you need high scores explaining to you, you're in the wrong place.

Please explain what difference the school's average standardized test score makes to a given child and their education. Thanks.

cohort and teaching?

cohort, but it is mostly a personalized experience. Some pay for test prep some don't, and some test better naturally. If you have a kid who has always tested very high then I think it isn't an issue of the test prep but rather overall cohort at that school.

This is true.

BCC feels closer to DC - it’s just off Wisconsin Ave.

+1 That is because BCC was the first high school in the county. I’m guessing it was built in the 20s/30s. It’s been expanded at least three times since then, but they kept the historical part intact. It is a beautifully designed structure, with a football / playing field / track adjacent.

Sad to say but this county is not what it once was and never will be again.

MCPS was never that great. People keep acting like it was but it was always a big factory.

Actually MCPS is better now and more diverse

more diverse yes, better ro, instead of bringing up the lower performing ahools they are bringing down the better performing schools. It's easier and less work for them.

If we're going by objective measures like SAT scores as an indicator, MCPS is much better today than 30 years ago.

SAT scores are not an objective measure. They have been drastically “dumbed down” over the past thirty years!

What is your evidence for that? More common is the view that people have gotten smarter over time.

I’ll give you an opinion on BCC from a parent of two students. I thinks it’s a fine school but not anything special. My daughter (senior) has had a few good teachers and a few not so good. My son is a sophomore and finding the same. It’s been nice to be able to save some money before sending them off to college but given all that has happened I would consider buying somewhere else and going private. I find more of my daughters friends who were in private got in early decision from private schools and she had literally no college counseling at BCC. Private schools have obviously been able to deal with covid and mcps was a disaster. I’m tired of it all being so unprecedented etc - kids are expected to perform so should the schools. It’s all sad given the inequity of it all. If you can afford it, I’d head to private school instead of MCPS.

PP, are you kidding? They’ve removed entire sections of the test, made the essay optional, and it is easy to Google this info.

Essay? What essay. When I took the test over 25 years ago, there was no essay.
