Walls admissions requirements for 2021 Applicants

I'd consider either school if my kid was interested in STEM, but he's more of a liberal arts type and not a fit for LMC at Duke. If he's screwed for Walls because of not weighting his almost-but-not-quite perfect 7th grade GPA, that's on them. He'd otherwise be a great student there and exactly the kind of kid who'd have gotten in every other year using the minimum GPA/test/interview process.

And for what it's worth, I fully support the changes other districts are making to increase equitable access to selective schools. I'd be completely behind a switch to making DCPS selective HS's lottery-only. But changing the rules of the road the day the lottery opens isn't fair and DCPS should have some kind of public process that gives families time to plan for admissions changes.

This is a reaction to the pandemic, not necessarily Walls’ admissions process going forward. This is a last minute change, but it’s for one year. That doesn’t mean admissions will go back to exactly as they were, but this top 500 GPAs will not be the admissions past this year.

The school mentioned that this process was for this year ONLY. Their intent is to go back to testing. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?!

Meh. My son really wants to go but if he doesn’t get in, that’s life! Academics is really about what you bring to the table. I’m sure he could get a good education at any school.

Yes, good students can learn anywhere. There are good and bad teachers at every school. I think DCUM puts WAY too much emphasis on testing and SES.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but it is really hard for good students to learn at some schools. When behavior is so bad and kids are so far behind or absent too often, the kids that don’t learn are the good students. They are good so the teacher doesn’t spend a lot of time worrying about them. This is, unfortunately, from personal experience working in some difficult school environments.

Banneker and Tech are no competition.

Oh you mean for white families afraid of minorities, yes I guess not.

Not PP but I looked into tech and the test scores are terrible.

Banneker's are great. I would do that in a heartbeat for my kids if they get in.

Banneker isn’t good for boys, especially those with IEPs. Pass.

Wow....really...you just said that? Personally, I was not impressed at all with Banneker and Tech really impressed me. If you are a techie or into biomed - it looks really interesting. Great teachers too and the Principal is a dynamo.

This is not a snarky question, but an actual one- how do you know the teachers are great?

Mi have a coworker who graduated from McKinley Tech. I can’t remember where she went to college. She loved McKinley and she is super sharp.
