Walls admissions requirements for 2021 Applicants

What about children who are homeschooled and don’t have grades? I know several who have attended in previous years.

I do. I think that 500 applicants will have straight A's.

+1

Given the grading during distance learning last year, yes there will be 500 students with straight As.

Yes, agreed. the one thing that will mess a few students up are those who got B's in gym, music or art in the first semester.
Those grades were not affected by the Covid grading.

I do NOT think there will be 500. They are taking the final grades (composite of all 4 quarters) not just the 4th quarter grades.

It’s still really easy to get an A. There are definitely 500 kids applying who got As 3rd and 4th advisories last year given the crazy extra credit grading situation. So as long as you got at least a B+ one advisory and an A- in another you have an A for the year. I can’t imagine 500 kids applying didn’t have those grades.

agreed. it will be the quarter classes (art, gym, music) from the first half of the year that separate the wheat from the chaff.

Yes but this is pretty much the kid that would have gotten an A anyway.

How do middle schools calculate GPA? Is an A- a 3.75? My kids had all As last year, but got an A- in one class in the first grading period.

If they only take kids with all A's, who are the kids who get 2's on Parcc scores while in Walls?

admissions is different this year. You usually just need a 3.0.
This year they are taking the highest GPAs.

Good question. For admissions Walls isn't following DCPS grading policy, which requires them to weight advanced classes for purposes of calculating GPA.

They did say they would “calculate GPAs” but I don’t know what that might mean.

In past years (although this year might be different) Walls calculated the 7th grade GPA of students in just the core classes. So that is what they might mean by calculate the GPA.

This massively advantages DCPS kids, which is maybe the point? DCPS had crazy grading rules during the pandemic, which basically made getting not an A for a remotely diligent kid hard. Privates and charters, including popular feeders like BASIS, did not have those same policies.
