Gift for first period?

Anonymous
In the old days, I would say go get pedis and go for lunch. Something that’s just a fun experience vs a gift. I’m not sure about a tangle gift. Maybe something you get her but don’t explicitly tie to the period would be ok.

Why wouldn’t you just tell them?

Yep, all children should know about how bodies work, puberty, etc.

This isn’t nearly as weird as people are saying it is. A lot of people do it.

+1. My MIL sent my DD red earrings and my DD still makes fun of this gift 5 years later.

How did your MIL even find out? Gross all around.

I think flowers would be lovely and special. why not?

Np. How is getting your period an accomplishment? I dont understand the celebratory aspect. It is just a bodily function that annoys you for years. Yeah?

No kid wants to bring a binder into the bathroom.

Great attitude to pass on to your daughters.

I agree - it is a great attitude to pass on to our daughters. It is not in fact an accomplishment but is biology. No present is needed.

LOL "period underwear" is the old, ratty pair with the stains on them you wear in case you have a leak.

Period underwear is absorbent leakproof underwear deigned to absorb upwards of 8 tsp of liquid. Some wear just the underwear. Some like it as back up to a pad, tampon or cup.

Do you have any experience with it and a brand to recommend? Obviously this is what I was talking about, not ratty old crap...

Thinx is one brand. I just couldn’t see my 10 yo using tampons or pads (I had a feeling they wouldn’t be taken care of in a hygienic manner when used) and I got her a ton of Thinx and they are great. She just chucks them in her dirty clothes when she’s done because they’re black and you can’t see any stains they make. They are a touch thicker than normal underwear but she has never complained about that. They don’t have girls sizes but an XS has been fine.

That's really gross. She should rinse them first.

My 12 year old was so excited to get her period. A few of her friends already had so she was really “waiting” for it. I had given her a few books about menstruation when she was 11, so she thought it was a big “deal.”

I didn’t give her a gift, but we did get our nails done. I got her Thinx and we chatted about periods for quite awhile. She had so many questions for me. It was cute bonding with her.

No gift. God. That would be mortifying. Weren't you a 12 year old girl once? If my mom did that to me I would have probably died.
