Ok, not Winifred. What about these?

I like Florentia, Juliet and Albina.

Wasn’t Araminta a character on Crazy Rich Asians. The girl who got married? I’d never heard it before reading that book.

But we do like that genre of name. I plugged it into Nameberry to see what else we might be overlooking, and these are the “similar names” that appealed to me. Thoughts, suggestions?

Edith
Harriet
Theodora
Minerva
Henrietta

Winifred is so much better than any of these! And it has such great nicknames!

+1 OP you're heading in the wrong direction here.

Edith is alright.

Noooooooo (and I have a great great something grandma named Henrietta. One of my aunts narrowly escaped getting named after her, which everyone still teases her about)

Minerva is on our list of dog names but we’d call her Minnie. On the list because my kids are obsessed with Harry Potter but it is really an ugly name. And the Minnie nickname becomes prett tragic of your kid is anything other than tiny.

I love Harriet and Henrietta but hate the others.

For some reason I also love the names:
Prudencia
Rosalind
Agnes

Sometimes I regret not naming DD Rosalind. Too late now!

Sounds like life insurance.

Yeah, and not even limited to white (though these are very UMC DC names).

I don’t really think you can call a name “old-fashioned” once it’s consistently been in the Top 20 for a decade, as Charlotte has. And some of the others are getting closer.

Anonymous wrote:Many of the names you’re suggesting are (incidentally, I assume) characters in Georgette Heyer novels. So I’m going to just share a list of those names and a few other Regency England favorites in case there are any you overlooked:

Prudence
Hester
Cressida
Henrietta
Drusilla
Penelope
Frederica
Margaret
Barbara
Araminta
Aurelia
Matilda
Serena
Leonie
Horatia
Theodosia
Lucinda
Lucretia
Adelaide

OP here. Thank you for this! I’d seen most of these names before, but I didn’t realize that what we were looking for was Regency England names! That’s super helpful and gives me a way to organize our search. Amazing!

Also, as several people have noted that Harriet reminds them of Harriet Tubman, I wanted to share that her real name was Araminta Ross. We are actually considering Araminta as a middle name in part for this reason, so I love that it popped up on this list!

If you want unique I would avoid Theodosia which will probably be trendy soon bc of "Hamilton"

What about Leonora?
