Not super weird, but my mom loved to eat ice cream with waffles, so we never had waffles without ice cream. I thought it was just as normal of a topping as maple syrup. I was well into adulthood before I realized that it was not shocking for a restaurant to serve waffles and not have ice cream.
My mom also used to make a lasagna-like casserole that used spaghetti noodles instead. We called it spaghetti pie. It was insanely popular with my sister's and my sports teams...but in retrospect it's kind of odd. |
I was just going to post the same thing! (But, ugh, I have a gag reflex just thinking about it.) Are you from the Midwest? |
|
My mom would take a tube of jimmy dean sausage, a brick of cream cheese and mix it with a can of rotel tomatoes. Then we'd eat it with a bag of tortilla chips.
I tried this once as an adult and was so grossed out. I loved it as a kid though. |
And thereve were Italians and Italian restaurants everywhere in the area! You should have come to my house for some meatballs and gravy every Sunday! |
| I have not even read this whole thread but omg where can I buy liverwurst again? I was my mom’s strange kid who loved slices of liverwurst on white bread sandwiches. I never knew it was supposed to be weird ? It was just so yummy. I never even see liverwurst in stores anymore! Sob! Where do you all get it????!!!??? I live in Reston. ( PS The funny thing is we are Irish American, but, my mom’s maternal grandmother was German, so I guess this is where these culinary habits and preference came from?!?) |
Not a universally Catholic “thing” for this particular meal, but, yes, *six* Fridays a year and Ash Wednesday we Catholics are asked to “sacrifice” a rich or expensive meal containing ingredients such as meat. Different cultures around the world (because “catholic “ means “universal”) have different customs so this is just one example. |
My dad did that, too! Once or twice a year I will go through the trouble to make pound cake from scratch. Mostly so I can squirrel away part of it for a few days, cut it into cubes, and make myself “cake cereal.” My family thinks I’m weird, but it’s so good! |
Kartoffelklöße Love these. Also spaetzle. |
Abstaining from meat is universally catholic bc it is canon. |
Reread the first post. Catholic thing was referring to no meat on Friday nights. No need mansplain Catholicism. Also everyone eats egg sandwiches during Lent. This just sounds like a tortilla bocadillo And now I want a tortilla bocadilo |
Who is this “everyone”? I’ve never had an egg sandwich in my life, let alone any specific menu during Lent since I don’t celebrate Lent. Are you even aware of other religions/ cultures? |
| Creamed tuna on toast |
It’s in Giant and Safeway. Look harder or ask. |
| I think in the U.S. my mom's cabbage might seem unusual, but it was totally normal and still is normal in my country. Basically cabbage soup thing, which we still eat. Now that I think about it, when I moved here when I was 22, I used to make it all the time and bring it to work to eat. People looked at me really weird about it! Might explain how I did not gain the weight back then though! |
This is so confusing to me. You are not supposed to eat animal products during Lent! That is like the only rule the Orthodox church has for Lent. Except for some fish. SOme strict observer will eat fish on certain days during Lent, some will eat is all the time during Lent. Now, you tell me that Catholics are allowed eggs and cheese during Lent? So, in Orthodox church, you can be "vegan" with fish for Lent, but in Catholic, you can eat dairy and eggs, but can you eat fish during Lent? It seems to me like we just invent whatever we want and call it Lent. |
