There is no taylor island. They are keeping kids at taylor still at taylor.

Eastern Lyon village didn’t want to go to key unless all of Lyon village went to key (or at least all of the parts of Lyon village that are currently at asfs). So they moved 24130 back to asfs, and similarly they moved the two units north of lee highway that got moved to taylor In the original proposal back to asfs.
Since they were told to better balance enrollment and they could not come up with another way of filling taylor (It was at 80% in the original proposal), they left most of the kids that would have gotten moved out of taylor at taylor.

Asfs has an island in option b, but who cares. It’s only an island because of an unpopulated block (the one with giant) is attached to a Virginia square planning unit instead of 24110. Move the block (which is giant— no kids on that block) to its own planning unit and zone it to asfs. Presto. No island.

Wait, how can the Lyon Village families have such strong say into where they end up when it makes the boundaries so complicated and disjointed?

Because that’s how all this works.

The people who complain most effectively drive the decisions.

A big part of the driver for this mess was ASFS original F'ed up boundary, so now they are doubling down on it?

I kind of can’t believe they are seriously proposing Reed be so full or even over capacity Day 1. That is a huge risk.

Who says there can be no trailers on the site? Good luck with that.

What are they going to do with all the kids if no trailers. I don’t understand how that’s really preferable to the McKinley community.

NP here. We live close to the Giant in Virginia Square and are currently zoned for Taylor. Under the proposals for December we were moving to the ASFS building, near Hayes Park. Is that changing with tonight's working session?

I want the Gym Teacher back. This Duran guy is NA sellout. I thought APS was going to do something about diversity - Duran is just making it worse.

Not the school boards problem to solve diversity. If you want to increase diversity talk to county board and address zoning/housing issues. That said, we need someone willing to make a hard decision and stick by it. Eliminate engagement!

You stay ASFS

But holy F, Option B leaves the Ashlawn tail. Are you sure you are zoned to Taylor? VA giant looks like it’s in Ashlawn? The only part zoned Taylor is the planing unit with ASFS inside it.

Exactly!! Stop asking for community feedback at every step. This is what you get.

Option B has to be one of the worst maps I’ve seen. Current boundaries are horrible and this keeps them that way.

I'm not a McKinley parent, but I don't have a problem with Reed not sitting inside its attendance zone. The school wasn't built in the right place - it was just built where they could get land. Why should Tuckahoe families go to an undercrowded school for years and then get to go to a brand new school? Why should they be better off than the rest of the county?

Pretty sure they threw B in there just to make A look more palatable.

Since you aren't a McKinley parent, you actually don't seem to have the right information. The Reed location can be filled quite well with walking planning units. More students at McK live within walking distance of Reed than McK. The transportation costs of the school being in Westover instead of Madison Manor is significant. The problem is that folk who live near Wilson don't want to go to Ashlawn, so they are acting like babies.

Tuckahoe could easily fill up if the Madison Manor families (who will be on buses no matter what) were sent to Tuckahoe. That would be much better than going to from a full McK to a full Reed. They can't see the forest......

Why don't people want to go to Ashlawn? I generally hear good things about the school. Is it just about not wanting to be split up?
