Tell Me About Fairfax Station

Crosspointe will get you into south county hs max. 2 tier bottom school. Houses are a ticking bombs as older owners havent been updating since 80. Nothing to write home about. Tons of lisiting just sitting in 800 range with reductions.

Read the thread. OP isn't looking at Crosspointe but rather the actual Fairfax Station neighborhood much farther north that feeds into Lake Braddock or possibly Robinson if you are farther out toward Clifton.

There's very little on the market in the Silverbrook ES area (Fairfax Station, feeds to South County). I see a bit more in the Lorton areas that feed to Halley ES.

OP here again. Thanks for all the lively discussion.

Some new information:
1. After the pandemic, one of us will no longer be going into an office on a regular basis. There will be travel from DCA but we won't be driving ourselves anyway.
2. Budget is up to 1.1m, but would like to stay closer to 1m. We'll be able to put down about 500k in cash.

Why no price appreciation? I feel like the houses in the desirable areas are getting snapped up fast and appreciating.

Op here. So what’s a better place to buy around here on our budget?

To OP—for some reason there is a lot of hate for Ffx Station on DCUM. If you’re looking for a nice family oriented suburban area, you will be happy with the location. Those of us that live here love that it’s not as dense as the closer in areas and are happy with the schools. There are great parks nearby and some of the neighborhoods connect directly to trails and parkland.

Why does DCUM hate Fairfax Station but love to recommend neighboring Burke?

1) Burke is a little closer and has more “stuff,” well, nominally more at any rate. 2) Prejudice against South County HS which has more cheap areas feeding into it and higher FARMS rate vs. LB and Robinson which are basically universally middle to UMC. 3) People not understanding that the Fairfax Station area and neighborhoods are changing and starting to attract younger families - when I moved to this area 10 years ago, the homes in Crosspointe, South Run, and some of the other nearby neighborhoods would sit because they were too pricey for many first time buyers, but not updated enough for those who could afford it.

The part of Fairfax Station people are talking about here is not Crosspiointe. It does not feed into South County but rather Lake Braddock and Robinson.

Isn’t Burke cheaper and uglier than Fairfax Station proper?

People think that Fairfax Station is another poorer version of Great Falls with huge dated old houses, no walkability, and a long driving commute. And the rest of the people apparently think it’s just another name for Lorton, or so this thread would indicate.

Somehow Burke is more acceptable because the houses are closer together, there are stores and buses, and it’s on the right side of the FFX County Parkway. I don’t understand the thing about the schools being better though. No one has looked at the school pyramid map lately, I guess.

Seems like there is a lot of misinformation here about what Fairfax Station actually is.

OP here again. Thanks. One other area we are looking at now is Oakton/Vienna. One parent WFH long term other than travel once COVID is over, one parent commuting to Old Town on flexible schedule a few days a week.

Budget is ideally around 1-1.1 though it's our goal to put down about half of this in cash.

Thoughts on Oakton/Vienna vs. FFX station given this info? Are there specific neighborhoods we should target in Oakton/Vienna?
