Yes, that's how I'd answer my job if my "need to know everything" neighbor asks me what i do for living. you know what i don't tell you? between emails and meetings, i review reports, i write papers, i direct contractors, i deal with stakeholders, i perform analysis...etc. do you really want me to tell you all that?? |
There is a lot of bloat there as well. There are a lot of hard workers, brilliant and committed people, but many others who use the hierarchical/political culture to their advantage and do minimal work. Your neighbors aren’t necessarily freeloaders just because they spend some time in meetings and do their transactions over email, though. |
I've been working for the Feds since 2005, and man, if this is what most people do, I've been doing it all wrong. I've regularly worked in excess of 40 hours per week throughout my entire career. GS-14 and 15 jobs. |
This is unusual for GS14 or above, but it was normal for GS12 or GS13 at one of my agencies. They reached the top of the scale and check out, but I cannot blame them. Incentives were so messed up at that agency and rewarded longevity instead of quality of work. They took advantage of the system—why work hard when you get your promotion and/or bonus by doing the bare minimum? |
Was this the SSA? If so, had the exact same experience. |
You post about this a lot. Did you want to fly to meetings too pp? |
