Overrated schools

UVA for everything (especially on this board)
U-Chicago outside of humanities/economics
Notre Dame
Georgetown outside of international relations/government
Vanderbilt for everything

Brown, Yale are also heavily overrated in STEM discipline. Dartmouth overrated for everything other than going into investment banking.
But their prestige as Ivies can outweigh whatever academics they may be lacking.

Bizarre posting or possible troll.

Yeah I'm sure that's why no one has posted MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, Cal Tech etc. as overrated, because they've accepted all the kids of every poster here.

Or perhaps you saw a school you are associated as correctly being called overrated.

Who thinks of Cal Tech as on par as MIT, let alone Harvard? Other than the occasional booster, people correctly rate Cal Tech and Berkeley a notch or two below the top schools. That's why those two schools are not called overrated.

You couldn't have screamed "East Coaster" any louder.

West coast resident here. Stanford is on par with Harvard and MIT. Cal Tech is certainly a fine school but not on par with the aforementioned three. Sorry if that isn't what you want to hear.

Just repeating what you said before doesn't make it convincing.

I do.

So do I. But most importantly, so does MIT.

Florida institute of tech also thinks it’s on par with CalTech.

But MIT doesn't think Florida Institute of Tech is a peer. MIT selected: California Inst of Tech, Carnegie Mellon U, Cornell U, Harvard U, Princeton U, Stanford U, Yale U

Caltech lists Carnegie Mellon and Rice among its peers.

What are bizarre post. First you insinuate that the only schools called 'overrated' are schools that the person themselves didn't get into. You think that everyone's kids is getting into Harvard, Cal Tech, MIT, Berkeley here? If not, why aren't they being overrated?

And yes Cal Tech is on par with MIT, which makes it better than Harvard in academic rigor

CalTech used to be a vocational school until it came to money. First thing it did was to buy prestige from academic power houses like Oberlin and Columbia. It’s a vocational school that’s Maybe two Notches above universities such as Cal State that caters to blue collar families. They belong to the same species. MIT on the other hand hangs with Harvard, Yale...

This list gives me second hand social anxiety. I feel bad for the schools that picked schools that didn’t pick them back. It’s like not matching on Tinder.

Is Astrophysics a good vocation? How does its prospects compare to plumbing? Pipe fitting? How about Bioengineering? Is that kind of like carpentry?

The point to remember is that status of colleges and universities is not static, its a moveable feast. So while one poster thinks Cal Tech is way below MIT they are probably gauging this on their peer experiences. While the fact is, Cal Tech has moved up the ranks, to the point that the poster made about MIT recognizing it as equal.

See? Not every one sees blue when you say "blue" sometimes they see shades of "green".

I doubt many of them used anywhere close to a similar methodology, and who knows who filled these things out. By the looks of it, private schools really never choose public schools.

You really don't get to be #2 on a list like this if you are one step above Cal State Fullerton, as someone was claiming.

Almost all schools choose peers in their strategic plans. It is important who they choose because it will be used by people like the board of trustees in order to compare finances, research productivity, admissions etc. That is why schools try to choose schools with similar missions and quality. If a school doesn't choose wisely, they can look very bad in comparison and that can lead to things like presidents getting fired. This was not just a survey for a magazine.

That the posters on here know so little about how academics works makes me wonder why you think anybody would care about your opinion about a school like Caltech. Most people here probably cannot understand the vast majority of what happens there.

+1000

CalTech is not at MIT level. It’s a smaller and a very specialized school compared to MIT. It’s pretty much a hi-tech vocational college compared to MIT, Harvard, Yale...

Cal Tech has less 1000 students total. The SAT distribution is higher than Harvard. It doesn't have legacy admissions nor affirmative action. It has 79 Nobel laureates in faculty or alumni.

Cal Tech > Harvard in terms of academic rigor and raw student intellect. However Harvard has other positives.

If you are not a troll, you are a massive ignoramus. Have you looked at the STEM faculties for Brown and Yale? Have you looked at the research being done?

You have to let the bitterness go. It makes you look bad.

Idiot, the thread is about "Overrated" schools, not "Shit" schools. Yale is often considered the 2nd best school after Harvard. They are no where near that in STEM. That's what makes it overrated for STEM, not because its a terrible school
