This is so entertaining. VA people try to deflect their racist state on the northern states. Despite the fact the only state celebrating this holiday is VA. And there are clearly plenty of hate groups in NOVA yet you keep saying it’s not like that.
Face it, VA is stuck in the past. Google the list of antiquated VA laws still promoting segregation. You are the old south. You just want to deflect that on others or change the conversation. But you are what your state celebrates, your laws support, and many in your state celebrate. Consider moving of you want to keep that progressive thing going. |
Why do you care so much about a holiday in a state in which you clearly don’t live? Don’t you have anything better to do with yourself? Any friends? You keep making the same small point over and over and over again. To what end? No one besides you seems to care. |
People had more loyalty to their state than to the USA in that era. Keep in mind the federal government was weak at that time compared to today. It was more like the EU is today. The whole reason Lee didn't take command if union forces, which he was offered, btw, was that he would have been fighting against his own home country. Think if the UK didn't have brexit as a means to peacefully leaver he EU, but had to fight their way out. |

I can't speak to places like Mississippi but I have lived in NoVa and points north and have several members of my (also African American) family.
Having also been interested in history, I know that southern and northern racism are two sides of the same coin. People have varying degrees. Some will come right at you with a sword and some will put a thousand tiny exacto knife cuts on your skin and let you die of an infection. That type will congratulate themselves on how progressive and non racist they are. |
Lived in VA almost 30 years. I've never heard of this |
How could you never have heard of Lee-Jackson-King Day? When we moved here there it was in FCPS and I believe a day off. Creepy juxtaposition. Odd it was there but another weird fact is we heard less racist stuff here even then than in the NY area. But I never saw blackface and am shocked at Northam and Herring. Those 2 are an alternative universe. So the nuts are coming from all over for this gun thing just like they did in Charlottesville. VA is paying for being cap of fools in 1860. Menwhile the much aligned West VA broke off in 1862 in an active war. Maybe NOVA can join WEVA. |
Right. For his own reasons he fought against the US and was considered a traitor. Died a traitor and not a US citizen. We don’t need a day to celebrate him. |

Buh-bye, traitors! Making progress in the General Assembly:
“A bill scrapping a state holiday named after two Confederate generals passed Virginia’s state Senate on Tuesday. The legislation, introduced by Sen. Louise Lucas (D), passed the assembly with a 22-18 vote in favor of removing Lee-Jackson Day in the Commonwealth and making Election Day a state holiday.” https://wamu.org/story/20/01/21/virginia-senate-votes-to-remove-lee-jackson-day-make-election-day-state-holiday/ |
Lotta folks feelings gonna be hurt. |
Like no one. Lived here for decades. This is not an issue. I've never even heard of it. |
Need I remind you you’re 1 person. There’s 8 million people in Virginia. Please don’t claim to know them all or speak for them all. Like I said... Lotta folks feelings gonna be hurt. |
Yes, the Virginia chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is going to be peeved. Fun fact: that group was founded in Virginia. |
This, and still remembers the War of Northern Aggression. |
This. Virginia is part of the deep south. |
I went to kindergarten in Bowie. I clearly remember the music teacher coming and and we sang "Dixie" in kindergarten. |
