Briar or Darcy for a girl?

It is a name. It means "a thorny patch", and was the original name of Sleeping Beauty - Briar Rose.

People my age (47) and older will associate it with different fictional characters.

And OP, I don't think you want your daughter to be associated with Briar Rabbit and Briar Fox - unless you're posting this from Klan HQ.

This is in addition, of course, to Brian (i) being too close to Blair, and (ii) sounding outright stupid all on its own.

That’s Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox. Briar is a dumb name but not for this reason.
- another 47-year-old

Isn't Br'er short for Briar?

Yes it is. "Another 47 y/o" looks kind of dim here.

I thought Brother but maybe I am wrong?

Br'er is absolutely short for Brother. "Don't throw me in that BRIAR patch!" said Br'er Rabbit.

Please don't name your child Briar. If you want something botanical, why not Linnea, Arliss, or Holly?

I like the sound of Blair and Briar together. But we’re also considering Darcy.

Blair and Briar sound HORRIBLE together!!! Like Brandon and Brenda. Please, no.

Am loving all the pop culture references!

Holly is a prickly shrub.

Violet is a weed, so is Clover. Olive is a food. And yet, people use these names without issue.

That said, I think Blair and Briar sound absolutely ridiculous.

+1. It's a borderline tongue twister trying to call them out one after the other.

Anyone who watches or references that abomination has no business giving advice on . . . well, on anything.

OP here. I like the suggestions for Quinn and Paige. I will run them by my DH.

It sounds like you’re going for a “popular girl from the 80s” vibe here and Paige does that for you. Go for it.
