UChicago ED

My friend said her kid was doing this, but that didn't make a lot of sense to me - why would they admit you in January if they didn't admit you in December?

Deferral is a gentle way to ding an applicant. While it is possible to move from EA deferral to ED2 and get accepted by showing commitment, ED1 deferrals are harder. You would normally only get in, if they feel there is something interesting in your application that they want to explore further but don't have enough data to do so. The rumor is that this year, Chicago admitted fewer kids ED1 and even denied a bunch outright. They must have a feeling that the ED2 pool will be quite strong

How could they know this?

Agree. It's known as a "soft denial". Legacies get it a lot. Also kids who have someone on the faculty going to bat for them with admissions but whose sat 2 test scores are too low, or just not something special in the overall package. DC got a deferral at Princeton on SCEA and ultimately denied.

First is likely the worst. One advantage is that as ED/EA there are no/fewer other schools that could have bad news around now.

The big disadvantage we are worried about is how much would a Chicago rejection kill enthusiasm for competitive RD applications.

The second shock is definitely the worst. It is like a confirmation to the first shock, you are not good enough.
