Experienced Parents: Where did your children have EXCELLENT college experiences (this decade)?

McGill. My DC loves the arty Montreal vibe - like New York, but more manageable and chill. Also loves the diversity of the students and the vibrancy of the local community (lots of great small businesses, charming walkable neighborhoods, etc). McGill is very social, which fits my kid’s personality. The winter was intense, but not as bad as DC expected.

UVA has been a wonderful experience for my DD. She has really made the most of her college experience in terms of involvement with academics, research, clubs, and more. She loves the traditions and the people. She has close relationships with professors and raves about her classes. She also loves the city and people of Charlottesville - it's a special place. I think that it was a good environment for her to grow as a person. She's a very open-minded, self-starter type of person, though, so I think she could have been happy in a variety of college settings.

Penn - my DS is having a great experience there. For him, it's the perfect blend of academics, interesting clubs, networking opportunities, career and advisor support, friend circle/social life, and he loves the culture, restaurants and nightlife of Philadelphia.

Freshman year courses are generally a joke. Be very alarmed by any GPA under a 3.3.

O.K...... Curious to know what you would do if your child got under a 3.3?

I'd be fine with it if my D.D. were lower than this.

Me too.

What’s to hate? It’s a great education. And it never hurts kids to be around different types of people. My liberal SLAC kid is applying now and would be looking at W&L if Greek life was not so prevalent. He wants a non-Greek campus.

It’s like saying a moderate conservative kid shouldn’t go to Oberlin. I hope they do. Different viewpoints are great for class discussions.

Glad to hear it went so well!

DP but my kid is at W&L now. I think this post is super useful - because lots of DCUM says w&l is omgsogreek and omgsoconservative and my kid isn't conservative, randomly decided to join a fraternity (He's super nerdy and found his tribe, and it's adorable. They're really just like brothers"

That doesn't fit the forum's prevailing stereotype narrative.

Same. Our DC is very, very happy there. It was first choice but the whole process is a crapshoot so we didn’t know if it would all work out. DC has met nice kids, loves the classes, finds the professors very accessible and has joined a bunch of clubs. Doesn’t like the food though

Carleton. My DD has found the students very nice and they take care of each other. Her classes are small (a number under 15) and she knows her professors well (class dinner at their house, babysits for another). It’s a small town but has everything she needs. Has been to Minneapolis at least once a semester to go to a museum or show. The weather hasn’t been an issue but she likes the cold. She definitely found the right school for her and seems to be busy and enjoying it.

Both schools are ok for the kids who don't get into Carleton.

If my SIL tells me how awesome Elon is because her kids loved it there, I don't know if I can continue to filter out what I want to say: glad they loved it, but there lives post-graduation kind of suck--really low-paying jobs, not sure what they want to do with their lives, etc. So really, how did that work out for them?

Meh, I have Ivy League grad nieces and nephews in the same boat.
