| I can’t tell if OP is obtuse or an arrogant a$$hole. I’m leaning toward the later as he has folks on here explaining that their kids have to apply widely in order to comparision shop due to their finances. Whatever happened to the notion of quiet money. Your neighbors that did well but hid it ? The lack of social graces is astonishing. |
| 20 years ago, if I hadn’t gotten in ED to my first choice school, I had 9 more applications filled out and ready to go. All typewritten! Applying broadly isn’t new, there’s just a lot less certainty you have a chance at any of the places you apply. |

Why are they applying to so many schools? Because college is a large investment for many families. There is a lot of uncertainty year to year in the applicant pool and therefore students (and families) need to be able to hedge their bets.
There are many great students applying from the greater DC area to the same schools. There are only so many spots. |
35 years ago, I applied to THREE schools! THREE. My more ambitious friends applied to 4 or 5. I stuck with three because my safety school was the one where I was a legacy (both parents) and we could afford it, and I would have been perfectly OK going there. I just wanted one of the other two instead. |
That's VA, honey. |
Yes dear, nothing has changed in 35 years. What a stupid comment. |
| Only striver families do this. It’s uncommon behaviour amongst well-born. |
Another a$$hole flagged. Not sure if it was the attitude or the pompous spelling - maybe a little bit of both - that gave you away. Here's your upper crust code - we have funds so we can avail ourselves of ED. You don't have funds so you have to compare pricing - makes you plebeian. Here's my take - your kids are going to need the advantage because they lack the grit and the exceptional intelligence that is required to compete in today's global labor pool (notice its' not labour). So you need them to get that front office job at Morgan Stanley because otherwise they are going to get smoked and you'll never get them out of the carriage house. |
Oh, it is already page 6 of this thread so I thought we were at the random comment stage. I was just lamenting how times had changed! |

To those that argue don't apply to that many schools
When it's a couple years later and someone is applying for jobs do they worry about the number of applications. No they increase applications to have a better shot at getting a job. Same principle applies for college admissions. |
The more important question is why you care. They’re not your resources. Limit your own kid and everyone else is free to do what they want. |

Tried to encourage our girls to apply to more and their response was "only the annoying kids do that, mom." Both girls are at top schools.
Also note, shotgun blasting RDs is a waste of time and money if you're unhooked. Our daughters did flagship public as safety and ED to their dream schools. Had they not gotten in to the dream schools, they just would have gone to the public flagship. |
More hubris. “Only the annoying kids have to compare prices Mom. Bet they didn’t even go on vacation for Spring break.” You do realize that full pay is a hook ? I quess my only solace is that us poor folks don’t have to shell out 280k because a$$holes like yourself are footing the bill. Now if you had acknowledged that you had been fortunate in life so gratefully your kids could afford full pay and therefore could take advantage of ED and not have to apply RD widely I’d say good on you. |

We will apply widely because we are Asians. Since we are immigrants, we do not have legacy. We also are not White or URM, so consequently we do not have influence or affirmative action in our favor.
Top notch GPA, SATs, APs, community service and ECs are common in our community, so we just have to gamble and apply to 20-30 schools. Oh well, eventually the cream will rise to the top. |
