Honestly, MCPS can’t even accommodate the students that is currently has. Our MS has class sizes in the 30s. Our 5th Grade Compacted Math class has 35 kids in one classroom.

There are no extra classrooms where MCPS can accommodate 4 years olds for preK.

Also, we are at a Title 1 school and see the kids who have gone through the current Head Start program. It’s great in theory, but the kids are still behind in K-2nd grade. It certainly doesn’t seem to be a good ROI.

Make class sizes smaller and MCPS more efficient and then I can get behind Universal preK.

THIS!!!! I'm a liberal, but there are so many needs in the existing school system, how are they going to fund universal pre-K? I would rather them add another teacher to my child's Kindergarten class of 27. That would help kids more than a year of pre-K. Put the staff and resources where it matters. More staff in the EXISTING Kindergarten could accomplish a lot- more than a year of pre-K. Smaller group instruction for reading and math, facilities improvements, more school counselors. Kids are already in trailers at some schools, where is the classroom space for this pre-K? Universal Pre-K sounds like a great campaign line, but everyone needs to think a little harder about this and what would be given up so all 4 year olds can have a year to learn the alphabet and share.

I'm pretty sure they can still eat at school or at a community center near them. Many FARMS kids also receive WIC and food stamps so it's not like they are really starving.

If the school is open to feed FARMS students, how is going to a 4 day week going to save the school system $$?? If the building is open you need custodial staff, heat, staff to supervise/feed children, busses to get them there...

Posters have also discussed the idea of giving everyone free access to community colleges, paying teachers more and free pre-k for all. Where will all this magical funding come from and how will MCPS students be impacted?

That’s ridiculous, surely people can get their children to school for a free meal. Students in middle and high school can catch the county city busses for free. There doesn’t need to be any staff except for those who are on 12 month contracts( the school admin, front office and building service workers). School busses are not needed. If you feel that bad PP, offer a neighborhood free carpool to help out the county.

Jealous's math is all wrong. He wants to fund it with casino tax revenues. Sounds good, right? Well, what are those revenues going towards now? Other programs. Basically it was a loophole that they essentially redirected casino revenues to the general fund. Now if they put that money towards education instead, what happens to the programs it's currently funding? That's left out of his education plan (I read it.. it's on his website).

Baltimore's unheated schools are a result of their own mismanagement at the local level, not lack of funds. I don't want to pay for their incompetence.

Ben Jealous is running on an idiots platform. Which is too bad because if he had gotten out to talk real communities in this county and other MD counties he might have gotten some useful ideas that would have enticed people to vote for him. Instead he is spouting unicorns & rainbows.
