What's the deal with the Safeway on Conn. Ave. in Chevy Chase DC?

This is true of every single grocery store I have been in with the exception of maybe TJ. All safeway stores have this problem for sure.

No, they don't. Giant almost never has this problem, IME. Every time I go to Snider's in SS, I breeze through the checkout line. WF is well-staffed.

It's why, even though we live five minutes from the Kensington Safeway, I almost never go there.

Agree on Snider's, was thinking the big chains. Which Giant is not understaffed? The one in SS one EW Hwy has about 20 closed checkout lanes every time I am in there and a line going down the aisle for self checkout. WF in SS also not well staffed.

Really? I haven't ever had a problem getting through Giant. The ones I go to semi-regularly are by Wheaton Mall, at Georgetown Square (across from Wildwood), on Rockville Pike by the Chick Fil A, downtown Bethesda on Arlington Road. I usually do the self-checkout. Rarely go to the one in DTSS, though. I was just at the WF in SS yesterday and the express line looked long, but we only waited five minutes or so. That's usually par for the course.

As a PP noted, I would LOVE a Wegman's close by, though.

I was in the WF in SS yesterday and noticed the all the poorly stocked shelves, partially empty. Brown meat in the open coolers (that aren't broken), over ripe fruit and almost no bananas. I don't think I can shop there anymore. Not to mention I could barely get into the parking lot and the express line was wrapped around the store at 3-4pm. I abandoned my cart and left. I think it's the beginning of the end for WF.

It kind of is. Jeff Bezos is on a mission to make it into a Target grocery store. Many items are out of stock and locally based foods don’t seem to be as readily available.
Part of what made Whole Foods special were the helpful employees but lo and behold there were 8 new ‘self checkout’ lanes at the Rockville WF, crammed in a tight corner by the bakery. If I’m shopping at Giant, Safeway or Target I bag my own stuff, sure. If a Target employee never touches/crushes my stuff again I’d be happy. But the Whole Foods workers are actually great at caring for your food and bagging it. Better than me. It’s kind of a special experience to go there and have your stuff carefully bagged by the WF employees. No more apparently - I’m sure that good old Jeff Bezos doesn’t want to pay people a good wage for a service. Pretty soon I’ll bet we’re bagging our own stuff while we shop and an automatic reader will check us out and bill us as we leave the store. More money for Jeff B.

Maybe at the SS place you’d rather have self checkout though from the sound of it.

Everything that Publix is filled with fillers, preservatives and sugar just like Safeway. The only difference is that they are well stocked and the store is well lit. The bakery and deli foods are gross ! I had to endure many Publix bought food based beach weeks with southern relatives - yuck.

Please try a farmers market or a Whole Foods some time.

None of the Boar's Head deli meats are "filled with fillers". I shop at Farmers Markets weekly. I also grow about 70% of our vegetables. Whole Foods is overpriced and yucky.

Where are those Boar’s Head meats from?
The crab dip from Publix - filled with multiple preservatives and fillers.

Whole Foods isn’t over priced and gross - it’s just too expensive for you. You want Publix prices. Here that means Giant, Safeway, Target or Harris Teeter.
There’s nothing gross about foods without fillers, preservatives and other artificial elements in them.

The parking situation does completely suck. We parked a block away and walked in.

I really only go to WF for cheese and maybe a few other things. The cheese selection is worth it, and I try to go to the one on the Pike because the parking is better there usually.

It is full of fillers.

Caramel color (class III or class IV) made from ammonia linked to cancer
Sugars (dextrose, maltodextrin, corn syrup, fructose) which are likely GMO
Canola oil (likely GMO)
Sodium Phosphate
Natural Flavors
Nitrates

It’s hard sometimes to realize that what you’ve bern eating for years isn’t the best - mostly because of the incredible advertising that bombards is in the US nonstop.
