What's the deal with the Safeway on Conn. Ave. in Chevy Chase DC?

I use the Harris Teeter in Adams Morgan. Decent selections and the staff is super nice.

+1 on the staff at the Kalorama Road HT... hands down the most friendly and helpful crew i've encountered in a DC grocery store.

The secret Safeway was the one north of Dupont where Glen’s is now and it was secret because the awnings said “townhouse.”

The CheChe Safeway is like torture honestly they should at least open some sort of business class check out lane or something. The sushi is terrible and the bread is all processed and in plastic bags. It’s going to bring down property values too because the new Amazon executives will want to be near a Whole Foods.

where is the other 'secret' safeway that people are saying is near rodmans on wisconsin? Someone said davenport and I had no idea there was a safeway there.

That’s why it was a secret. It was on an angled street just off Wisconsin and its back was to Wisconsin. If you didn’t know it was there, you’d never see it even if you drove past every day.

It was at Ellicot and 42nd street just behind Wisconsin and the auto dealership that was there on Wisconsin. It's been closed for a while but was open as recently as 2011 when I worked near there.

Hidden giant on wish and western closes at 10pm not 11pm. I am carless and hate going around to the entrance. Dumbest design even though I understand why it was built that way.

Agreed - that entire complex is horribly designed but it is in Montgomery County where they don't exactly do good transit oriented development.

Also that store is annoying - staff gets visible irritated with you if you show up after 9:30PM to shop.

Yes, OP, that’s the Safeway you got. It’s not the best ever but Ward 3 is far from a grocery store desert.

Social Safeway was upper Georgetown

I thought Secret Safeway was the one in the Watergate - but theoretically it could apply to both.

This made me chuckle.

It was bought in a development deal about two years ago by GDS so they can move their LS/MS next door to their US.

Definitely use the Safeway at Arlington & Bradley in Bethesda. It's the best of the lot anywhere near Chevy Chase for "regular" grocery stores. The Whole Foods at Friendship Heights serves that need. Both have underground parking.

+1 on the staff getting irritated at the friendship Safeway if you get there toward closing

The one on Wisconsin between Georgetown and Glover Park was called the "Social Safeway." It has since been considerably spiffed up.

Maybe there were two "Soviet" Safeways but I've lived in Chevy Chase for 17 years now and never heard the store referenced this way and before moving to Ward 3 I lived a block from what every one referred to as the Soviet Safeway in Dupont. There was also a Secret Safeway.

+1

I lived a block away from the Soviet Safeway and close to the Secret Safeway (which is now Glen's Market).

Op. We shop at the Whole Foods in friendship heights. Safeway is just for random things we forgot mid week. Although often go to broad branch market for those things if it's something they generally have in stock.
