What about names with unnecessary Ys, like Kathryn? |
| I look down on white people who give their child an ethnic names such as, Priya, Bodhi etc. |
Rhys is a classic Welsh name. A Rhys fought with Henry Tudor at Bosworth Field. It is funny that people who know so very little think they are in a position to judge others as low class. Creative spellings, on the other hand, are stupid. If you want to name your kid Aidan (a fine Celtic name dating to the Middle Ages) spell it Aidan, not Aydin. |
I look down on people in general who don't think of the child, and give them stupid sounding obscure names. This is not about white people or black people OP. Ignorant people are across the board. |
Welsh/Scottish. Not every name with a Y is affected, made up or millenial. |
Hadn't really thought about it until your post but yes, I subconsciously would make those associations. Extra points if there are random apostrophes thrown in the name. |
That is so not true. Names indicate CLASS more than anything else. Its more obvious than almost anything else when you havent even met the person. White people who use these bizarre names are always lower class and un-educated, if not illiterate. And other "white people" definitely think this. One should give their kids either traditional names or family names, no matter what color their skin is. There is no double standard here - freaky names = lower class parents. |
Exactly, because that poster is a jerk. |
| If you've got a lot of melanin you're going to automatically be appraised as a walking stereotype regardless of what your name is. On average it takes a person of color about 3 months of camaraderie/compliance in order for them to be regarded as an actual human being. Having a traditional name only cuts that waiting period down a little bit - about 2 months 3 weeks and 6 days. |
OK, I'm going to stop you right there. (NP) Please don't use this example. If you knew ANYTHING about Tudor history, you'd know that Henry Tudor and his uncle, Jasper Tudor, were Welsh quasi-noblemen who only had a very tangential claim to the throne. And their entire army was literally made up of ruffians--Welsh farmers and hired French mercenaries--as in they literally drained the jails to build their army. So please don't say that Rhys is some noble name based on the fact that a Rhys fought with Henry Tudor. Please stop reading Philippa Gregory novels and then pretending like you have a true grasp on history. |
| Rhys is still an old established name. Not some made up Mormon craziness. |
This. +1000. I can judge the parent who gave the name (though even then, I want to have some sympathy for the welfare mom for whom the name of their kid was one of the few things they saw as in their power) but I strive to never judge the child for it. |
I don't think OP is asking about judging the child, but about making assumptions about the child's upbringing. |
I dunno What would you think of a black man named Mark versus a black man name DeMarcus? |
Way to miss the point. The PP gave Rhys as an example of a "weird/made-up" name. Rhys has been a name for hundreds of years. It's remotely in the same category as "Kayden." |
