+1 the geographic discrimination was a proxy for race and a way for MCPS to reduce Asians whom they have already said were "over represented" in higher performance categories. |
| The CES program is just a joke? The kids got admitted to the magnet program at 3rd grade and received extended curriculums from 4th grade on. But at the beginning of 5th grade they didn't seem to be able to outperform the kids who were not admitted two years ago. I understand this can happen in a few cases. But if Cold Spring have fewer admissions then other schools, something must be wrong. |
It's a lousy proxy for race. Most kids at Cabin John, Frost, and Hoover aren't classified as Asian. Most kids classified as Asian in the downcounty aren't at Cabin John, Frost, and Hoover. |
Who keeps incorrectly saying that a larger sample size results in higher anything? This has never happened in any test or performance set. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2016/08/24/average-act-scores-drop-more-people-take-test https://www.mtexpress.com/news/education/as-more-high-school-students-take-sat-average-scores-drop/article_5549b850-731f-11e7-8131-a37967c3ebad.html https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/average-scores-for-sat-tests-drop http://www.jbhe.com/features/59_apscoringgap.html https://www.brookings.edu/research/race-gaps-in-sat-scores-highlight-inequality-and-hinder-upward-mobility/ |
It is a GOOD proxy for identifying Asian kids who are top achievers. Majority of the outliers are Asian in these school zones. |
Didn't I just read that in 2016 MCPS announced that MS test results showed that Whites and Asians were testing 2.5 grade levels ahead of their grade and URMs were 0.5 grade levels below their grade? You can't put lipstick on that student body issue within 24 months. No way. |
+1 What this shows is that MCPS is totally failing half the kids in the county. In 5th grade 87% of the kids who "exceeded expectations" for grade 5 Math are white, Asian or mixed race by 8th grade 94% of the kids who exceeded expectations in Math were from these three groups. Together these groups are just under half of the student population. Here we see exactly why these three groups are so highly represented in magnet programs (especially the math and science magnets). MCPS is totally failing half of the population and needs to focus its attention on deepening the bench of kids who are performing at a high level and so are qualified for these competitive programs. btw around 11% of ALL students overall "exceeded expectation" so doing well is just the bare minimum to be considered for a highly selective math and science program with enough spots for fewer than 2% of the kids in the county |
Starr and Smith are on the record saying that was their goal. They spent 2017 instigating that and here in Spring 2018 we see the results of their new selection process. |
Correct.. and they happen to be Asian American students. MCPS' own stats show this. Someone posted up thread... some 30+% of Asian Am. students score very high on tests. How many URM score very high on tests? The demographic of the magnet students should reflect high achievers by MCPS' own statistics, not the demographic of the entire district. |
| The new selection process fills me with optimism for MCPS and its future. More kids benefit and overall standards are raised. |
Could you please cite some instances where Starr and/or Smith said that MCPS should redo the admissions process for Takoma/Eastern and Roberto Clemente in order to close the achievement gap? Keeping in mind that Starr left MCPS over a year (February 2015) before Metis presented their report to the BoE in March 2016. |
How do you see overall standards are raise? MCPS didn't publish any evidence for that. |
I never thought that I would have to point out on DCUM that there are lots of white kids at Hoover, Frost, Cabin John, Westland, and Silver Creek. |
Still doesn't change the fact that those MS have a high % of Asian students compared to other MS in the county. |
Show me the median test scores of accepted students as proof that "the standards were raised"? |
