Amazing week, as usual. We chartered a small yacht from Bermuda. Had a chef on board, and the captain docked at interesting little places each night. The boat was very high-end, and had luxury cabins for DH and me, one for DS (8) and one for DD (10). Chef made delicious meals each night. We did some amazing shopping. |
People complain like this but you'll probably still take them to on a nice trip next vacation. If it upsets you that much don't go, let them stay home doing chores. |
Wtf? I say this in good humor. ![]() |
Laundry or your parents? We do wash on vacation but there were things like ski pants and jackets to deal with since we don’t wash those everyday when skiing. |
Flew into Edinburgh and spent first 2 days there. We stayed right on the Royal Mile and loved being right in the middle of the action. There is so much to see in Edinburgj! The castle was a ten minate walk. We loved the street entertainment. People dressed up in Scottish clothing playing bagpipes. Plenty of great restaurants, and stores. We loved all the allyways (called closes) St. Giles Cathedral , and so much more. Got rental car and drove to Oban for 1 night. On the way to Oban we stopped off at Sterling and had lunch and saw the castle there and explored the area a bit, then continued on to Oban. The scenery was just amazing. We had the view of the highlands in front of us with various Lochs beside us. Oban was a cute seaport village. The next day we got up and explored Oban a little bit and then headed to the Isle of Skye. We stopped at Glenchoe and Fort Williams on our way to Mallaig to catch the ferry to Skye. We saw the Glennfinnan Viaduct (Harry Potter movie train scene) stopped at The Ben Nevis Distilerey and a few other neat places. The drive was just gorgeous ! The ferry to Skye was only 30 minutes. We spent three days in Isle of Skye. We hiked Old Man of Storr, The Quiraing, fairy Glenn, and went to the Fairy Pools, and Neist point, and even had a picnic on a beautiful beach. We left Skye by way of the Skye Bridge and stopped at Eilean Donan Castle, Fort Augustus to search for Loch Ness, Blare Castle, dinner in Pitlochry and then back to Edinburgh to spend last night before flight home. The Scotish people are so friendly! There was plenty of great restaurants. The Highland cows are so cute. I could go on and on about this incredible place. All the places we stayed were booked through Airbnb and we were very pleased with all the places. Sorry for any grammer errors as I am severely jet lagged at the moment and trying to stay awake. |
Not PP, but Bermuda actually is quite affordable compared to many other destinations around the world. And Bermuda hotels are overpriced, so this kind of charter is fairly good value, especially compared to Europe (although on the other hand, it's also a watered down experience from a historical/cultural perspective). |
To 20:27, what was the weather like? I'd love to visit Scotland but always assume this time of year was unpleasant to visit.... |
Thinking of doing this trip. What was your itinerary? Where did you stay in Edinburgh? We (family of four) went to London for a week and loved it. |
This is actually still off season for Bermuda, so it was probably still quite cool (too cold to swim I expect) so that definitely helped the value equation. Still, a yacht is a yacht! |
We also did Vegas for few days! Had a great time and didn't gamble a penny. Nice hotels, nice pools, nice temps (80s), good food, Hoover Dam, desert adventure on ATVs. First time for everyone, kids age 10. Tons to do ...Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon, Zion Natl Parks is relatively close, so is the Grand Canyon for side trips. |
Yes, it really is too cold for swimming in Bermuda this time of year (at least comfortably). And some of these yachts can be chartered in the off season for less than it costs to fly two to Europe in business. There is less inventory though as the better boats are where the real money is (think St. Bart's) and then just position up to Bermuda for the summer. |
New Orleans!
Weather was warm (but not hot) and was a great trip for adults and teens. Plenty to see and do, too ![]() We booked early and got tickets for about $250 each. |
7 days in cape town was amazing!!!!! |
How does one get a charter yacht for the Carribbean and who much does that cost! I would like to do that if the budget is fair. |
Thank you so much! This is so helpful. I would love to go to Scotland sometime soon. |
