My husband did 20 years. Never been shot and does not have PTSD. Your children can join without your approval. |

So many ways to serve without joining the military.
DH is a fed works extensively in war zones and has done more military tours than most active duty. He's often in charge of them and works closely with them. We have more control over our lives, our postings, make more money, and can say no to postings. The only negative is that were he to die overseas, life insurance is null and void and our family isn't protected the way veterans' families are. He had a close friend that shamefully ran into this during a terrorist bombing in a war zone. |
| Our small private has sent kids to West Point and the Coast Guard Academy. We have been at the school for 4 graduations so far and 3 out of 4 years had 1 or more kids go to an academy. |

We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.
You don't want the truth, because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall. We use words like "honor", "code", "loyalty". We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said "thank you", and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. |
Trite. Nothing more. |
I strenuously object. |
| Just like stupid, you can't fix cowardice. |
LOL. Feel free to get yourself/your kids killed but don't ask me to honor you. It was your choice. |
I actually know a young woman from NOVA who was recently accepted into two of the academies (including the Naval Academy), I feel rather certain that her family did not have connections. |
The disrespect in this statement is appalling. Have a modicum of respect for those who are willing to do what they do in order to protect our country. It's not a liberal or conservative issue. You frame this as not getting your kids killed, but remember that these people are actually helping to keep your children alive. |
I think disrespect goes both ways. One side punch, the other side punches back. |
+1 I'm a military wife and my husband will deploy this year. I find this so disheartening. |
Seriously. PP, do you feel that way about cops/law enforcement? That no honor is necessary if they get killed in the line of duty protecting us, because that was their choice? WT living F. |
Kids who apply to the academies have to be very bright, very well-organized, very athletic, very capable of handling the military, willing to serve in the military, and plugged in enough to get a congressional nomination. The percentage of us with kids who punch all of those buttons is probably pretty small. |
Oh please. Trite indeed. |
