We did this a few years ago. It was fabulous. I was very surprised by Santa Cruz, was expecting it to be much sketchier. Maybe we missed the bad parts. DS and DH loved the boardwalk /rides.

If you have time, I'd recommend Yosemite. It's a haul to get to, but it's a national park for a reason.
