Guess having the Student Driver sign doesn't make a difference

So you would cause an accident just because some people don't say thank you?

Yes.

Perfectly. Please give your license plate and general area. I really really could use an insurance payout

You have a choice to either extend the established courtesy of letting me in as the alternate vehicle, OR, we can make contact. But I'm merging.

I drive an old, beat to shit truck, and I don't care about it. I've had two merge-sideswipes in three years. One I was found at fault for, and the other, the other driver was cited and I wasn't. I guess it depends on the opinion of the officer.

Anyways, I'm coming over when it's my turn. No one will get hurt, but if you don't want to let me in, your gonna lose some paint. And I'm ok with that.

+1

This is a great example OP. When teaching your son to drive, he needs to understand how to deal with drivers like these as much as he needs to understand the typical "rules" of merging. He needs to learn not everyone is going to follow "the rules."

There is no legal obligation to allow someone to merge into your lane (though aggressively blocking may be another issue). If you choose not to, you are a douchebag. But not a law breaker. Even if it is costomary for locals to “take turns” (which is nice and proper) it isn’t legally required.

So what you taught your son was not how to safely operate a vehicle in a lawful manner. What you taught him was that regardless of the law, he should do what seems fair.

You obviously didn't read my description. I specifically said that both lanes ended into one lane. So the other guy's lane was also ending as well. Unfortunately, nobody broke the law in this situation, including my son. He was in front of the guy who tried to cut us off and he has the right of way to merge next. He tried to speed up and cut him off the road.

You are probably one of those jerks who cuts people off on a regular basis.

I can't think of any roads I've ever traveled on where "both lanes ended into one lane." There is always a through lane, and an adjacent lane that merges into it. If you've found one, care to post it's location so we can all take a look?

Dude, I don't drive much, but even I have seen the signs that say "alternate."

I feel you OP. I too have a new driver, with big neon yellow magnets on our car. Two of them that are clearly visible to cars around us.

It's terrifying, about 50% of the drivers are assholes.

Now we know how Maryland drivers learn to be such shitty drivers. Mommy is a moron and signs don't apply to MEEEEEEE!

Seriously. NP in this thread (who grew up in the area and learned how to drive here), and it explains everything about Maryland drivers and how they come to be.

Your kid should have let the aggressive driver go first. Did you tell him that? Just because it's your turn to merge doesn't mean you should risk your life.

Honestly in this area displaying a student driver sign is just a bad idea. Most people drive aggressively/are in a rush and don't want to be slowed down by a timid driver so your making yourself more of a target to be cut off, even if you were in the wrong in this case.

It does happen though - there's an on ramp to the SW freeway in DC (just before the exit to 6th st) where there are 2 lanes for the on ramp, and then it drops to one lane. No signs, the lane stripes are worn and don't indicate the merge pattern, and it's sudden if you're unfamiliar with the on ramp.

But OP, when there's an aggressive driver, you still let them go first. Being able to adjust your speed to allow for aggressive drivers while not hitting the barrier is necessary.

Not to worry, Mommy is teaching kiddo how to be the MOST aggressive driver. It’s all about coming out in Top. No matter the cost.

How would I say thank you to you, while we're both driving?

DP (who doesn't do what pp does), but if you put your hand up and give a little wave or something when someone lets you in, that means thank you.

NP. Exactly. If I let you in because you waited until the last minute, you damn well better give me a thank you wave.

There was a study about a year ago that showed drivers should wait until near the end of their lane to merge over as this keeps traffic flowing best.

OP here. I had never noticed that sign to be honest. Because when there is a lot of traffic, that particular spot becomes a zipper merge. That is what people do over there.

There was an aggressive driver. My son came out in front because he was already slightly ahead of the driver. I didn't say to him to cut in anyway...he was just following the flow of the traffic, as he has done many times at that spot.

As for the person who posted the photo of the intersection, thank you, and WOW you need to get a life. This is exactly what people have been talking about when they say there are many many people with mental illness. Obsessing to the point that you seek out the photo online is a sick thing to be doing PP. You are a sad group of people obsessing about an incident with a 16 year old driver and defending the aggressive driver. Why? I imagine you are all the asshole drivers we all encounter on a daily basis, and you feel the need to defend your own road rage incidents.

It's not that hard to get a google street view photo. It was helpful to the thread for the PP to post the picture as many posters did not believe your story that it was an alternate merge.

Also, really? Streets sign don't matter when you drive? You go by feels?
