Guess having the Student Driver sign doesn't make a difference

Student driver signs are usually more than just bumper stickers, aren't they? Often it's a big placard on top of the car, which should be noticeable to anyone who's not totally zoned out.

That's for driving schools. I assume since the OP was in the car it was her personal car and therefore one of those hang tags in the back window like the baby on board tags. Perhaps she can clarify.

He was doing exactly as he should and it was his turn to merge but the jerk on his left would not let him in and almost drove him off the road. The position this driver put my son in was extremely dangerous because there was no shoulder and he almost hit a curb. Then he proceeded to tailgate us!! I am so shocked that jerk drivers don't even give a break to learning drivers!!

He may have been doing just the right thing, but you needed to teach him to yield to assholes and let them go ahead. No good being dead right...

I completely agree with this. It's far better for him to learn how to handle these situations when you're in the car to guide him than for him to never encounter them as a student driver and then have to face them for the first time on his own.

+1. Dealing with aggressive drivers is a skill new drivers around here have to learn and they shouldn't be learning it on their own. It's as important as learning to drive on a highway or in congested traffic.

How would I say thank you to you, while we're both driving?

DP (who doesn't do what pp does), but if you put your hand up and give a little wave or something when someone lets you in, that means thank you.

Well, I do that, but there's no way to know whether the other driver sees me or not, especially not at highway speeds.

For petesake, if you already do this, then obviously you're not the kind of drive pp is talking about. Not everything is about you, so there's no need to take offense.

I can't imagine learning to drive here. Your DC will learn to be aggressive because no one will ever let you in!

The sign helped a lot. People kept distance, especially on mountain roads. I think I going to keep the sign on.

Was this really worth posting about?

It's just as well, since the PP is basically saying, "I am an aggressive driver because I am angry that people don't say thank you when I drive considerately."

Exactly. I remember when my oldest was learning and one of the things we worked on was how to deal with assholes. If your son is ready for more than residential street driving, you really need to work on this. The behavior you describe is unnerving but unfortunately it will happen again.

You have to learn to deal with these people and get a sense of who is going to pull something like this.

A) This isn't an instance of "letting someone merge" who doesn't have the right of way. This took place in a merge zone, and OP noted her son was doing what he was supposed to do.

B) Ain't you a peach?

In that instance the sign hurt more than it helped. No selfish driver is going to let a car he knows will go slow in front of him.
