Trump announces policy banning transgender military service

This is all a distraction.

About time for some much needed common sense.

Approximately 250 Transgenders are in the Military of hundreds of thousands in a country of 340 million. Why is this even a story... meh!

Doubtful that your grandmother can serve in the military--but she still gets her freedom and liberty defended. Poor argument.

You're right. Yours is a poor argument. Thanks for pointing it out

I suspect a lot of people were enlisting in the hopes of having DOD pay for the transition. There have always been people who enlisted for medical care. Years ago, I knew someone who enlisted because his wife had cancer. Very sad. She was young. He did stay in after she passed and was an asset to the service. I also have known of others who did this. The data would be difficult to find, but I personally know of several who stayed in because of medical issues in their families.

For right now, this makes perfect sense. There are many issues to be resolved--for example: PT tests for starters. Does a transgender man have to meet the requirements of a man or a woman? Sexual harassment. This is confusing to people. And complicated.

Sure training can be provided. Training for this costs money and time when we have many hotbeds of activity around the world. And, yes, it appears that the military is attractive to people who wish to transgender because of the healthcare costs. And, think about this, the surgery must surely require a lot of time off from work--as well as the expense. Do we really want to deploy someone who is going through transition?

This is a military readiness issue.

This is not an easy topic. It is complicated and expensive.

This was said about black people.

This was said about women.

This was said about gay people.

It is not necessary to have commanded a unit to have seen this show before.

Black people do not require highly specialized surgery or special dispensation on PT tests.

I agree that women are serving well--but, if you think that it does not come with additional medical and social issues, you are very naïve. For example, a platoon leader who deployed to Iraq and had to return home (after all the training in preparation) because she was pregnant. This is expensive and dangerous--as she was replaced by a platoon leader who had not been trained for this highly specialized and quite dangerous job. Fortunately, her replacement was a great manager--but this is an "unintended consequence" of women in the military which is costly. The same with women on ships.
There are also the issues of sexual harassment and assault. It should not exist, but lots of money is being spent on this, as well. And, yes, some of it does come down to "he said, she said."

Again, do gay people require surgery? Do they require special PT tests? How many additional funds are spent on this?

This is not a "show". This is real life, real people, and real danger. The DOD needs to spend money on preparedness--not transgender surgery and more social training than we already have. A company commander out in the desert does not need to deal with this. There is a lot more to war than fire fights.

Just stop it. These were the same damn arguments made when bigots were trying to keep other groups out. I was alive for many of those debates and remember them well. They were horseshit then and now. Except in this case, HE APPARENTLY DID NOT EVEN CONSULT WITH THE PENTAGON BEFORE MAKING HIS ANNOUNCEMENT ON TWITTER. So he doesn't even have the cover of the institutions supporting this position. Or even knowing about this position.

This is nothing but reigniting the culture war. This is Trump cravenly trying to drum up approval with his hardcore base while everyone else is bailing on him for being...himself.

No. It's about trump finally bringing back common sense.

Oh I have an awesome idea! Let's ensure everyone has access to health care, and then people won't need to join the military in order to get medical care!

I guess...but when war kicks off with North Korea and they revive the draft, I can now tell my son how to follow the POTUS lead and avoid having to serve.

It is not common sense to remove able bodied, willing and trained soldiers from duty. And in this whole scenario, Trump (who AVOIDED service) and his minions are the only ones who think it makes sense.

I have another awesome idea, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights never said that Americans should have access to health care.

Actually it does... welfare encompasses healthcare, as does liberty.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yes, many people enlist because it is a stable job with health care. It is also a dangerous job that takes you away from your family. There's a reason the military allows non-citizens to enlist (and expedites their citizenship requests); there's a reason the Pentagon pushed for (didn't hinder) moves to integrate women further into the military. There's a lso a reason why you can't join without a family care plan, or with too many dependents (unless they really need your pre-existing skills). The military is not a jobs program.

Most people don't want the trade-offs, trans or not.

According to the DOD, 71% of American young people are not physically fit to serve. We're going to turn people away now?

Pander to the base. Deflect! Can we get some tweets on the fact that Wisconsin went for Trump? It's been a few hours since the Boy Scout speech and I forgot how many electoral votes he won.

LOL, sure it does. Please enlighten me on which Amendment of the 10 where it states this specific requirement?

It could be anything.

I have two trans friends. They don't deserve this sh*t. They don't choose their gender association any more than you or I do. The cruelty of this administration knows no bounds. I feel like we've moved back to the 1930s. Sick Trump, sick, sick, sick.

And yes, it's a diversion, but what else is new?
