APS - Did anyone go to any of the three "Walk Throughs" regarding the High School options?

Anonymous

Someone wrote on the Arlington Heights list serve wrote that they went to the walk through, and asked about the programing of the new 800 seat high school @ the career center. An APS rep answered that it hadn't yet been decided but it could have a culinary focus or a language focus, possibly.

CULINARY?!?! Is this the f*ing twilight zone?!? How clueless can these people be?

Oh what the??? Yes, sure an 700 kid culinary school. It will be oh so popular. Will make sure Arlington stays #1, for more restaurants than ever.

I'm getting so tired of this. Where can we actually protest? We need more than letter writing to the school board at this point.

Or, they are putting 600 seats at Ed Center and a total of 1300 (or 1500) seats at the Career Center? Comparing slides 3 and 5 is very confusing.

They will put 600 seats at the Ed Center. They will put 700 seats at the Career Center, in addition to the 800 seat expansion already planned for Arlington Tech.

So it's 1300 more seats total but the Career Center will have a 1500 seat HS, part of which will be Arlington Tech? or all of it? They haven't said what those seats will be.

It also says they will "renovate" the Ed Center, so it won't be a new building.

But is the 800 seat expansion already including the 300 or so expansion that they are planning for the immediate future? The neighborhood would like to know, how many kids exactly they are planning to cram into the career center location, when all is said and done, because the numbers do look now as if it is a FULL HIGH SCHOOL anyways, just without the full high school designation and/or infrastructure! And that would suck. Also, if they are putting that many kids in the career center site, the CC cannot ALSO house all the other programs currently there, and shouldn't have the Montessori elementary with busses from the entire county on the same site as well. Again, total lack of sensible planning on display.

Yes, there is the already-planned expansion to add seats to accommodate an 800-seat Arlington Tech. This is an additional 700 on top of that. They have not said that the added 700 would also be Arlington Tech. It could be some other choice program (won't be a neighborhood school because it's too small). Plus you have the HILT and PEP programs there. Plus 11th-12th graders from all over Arlington coming and going during the day for Career Center classes. I guess if they want to drive up participation in AT they could stop letting kids from other schools come over to take classes. Add in a potentially PreK-8 Montessori and that's a LOT of use of that site.

Don't you think this is a coffin nail in Montessori getting their own building over there?

But then where do they go? They are vacating Drew, and there is no land/money for them to get a brand new building somewhere else. We cannot afford to take a school, any school, offline.

Yeah,, that will fill a school. I'd suggest that if it has to piggy back off existing Career Center asset then a pre-med focused school might have some appeal -- could build off the physical therapy, EMT, pharmacy classes they already offer. Require fairly high stats from kids to apply so that it is perceived as 'selective'.

Full Spanish immersion HS to attract additional Hispanic kids from neighboring planning units? I think it'd fill 800 seats (200 per grade) just fine. Kenmore alone probably has close to 150 per grade.

Don't you worry, O'Grady will take care of Montessori. It will end up where ever she wants it. It'll be grand. She loves loves Montessori.

Then convert Kenmore to full Spanish immersion. What is this nonsense?

Why would this be nonsense? And where would KMS kids go? To CC? What would be the point of doing that?

No. I meant all of these bandaids are nonsense.
APS needs to build a comprehensive 4th High School.
Whether they want to or not.

Instead they want to put 1800 HS seats on the Career Center site, containing a hodgepodge of programs, when that number is a full comprehensive High School already. Not to mention the Montessori school and the Arlington community High School. And the other programs.
These are way too many students for this site. It actually comes out to more students than Washington Lee has right now.

The hybrid plan is insane!

Coz when WL parents complain the default fallback solution is kick the problem over the border to the south then voila, it disappears!

Please protest to keep north side crowding on the north.

I'd join a riot for sure!!! Just tell me when and where.

Just posted the following on the ASFS thread (because of discussion about AH and county priorities and petitions) because it's yet another example of how the county is just headed in the completely wrong direction...

I'm musing on the question of AH and county resources and just amazed (and bewildered) that in light of the insane pressures on the APS system, the county really wants our feedback on "pubic art."

Maybe I'm just a philistine, but give me some decent schools and then we can talk about frigging art!
