seriously WTF. where would you like the homeless to go exactly OP?

Jail, which will give them shelter and food, away from the community. They're crime and drug cancers. It's not a human right to walk around high, burglarize homes, commit larceny, defecate in public, sleep on the sidewalk.

Broad, sweeping generalizations, much? Take a deep breath, for God's sake.

One would think the Arlington voters would have learned by now.

There is nobody running! So the Democratic candidate generally runs unopposed after getting their party's blessing.

A. The GOP did run someone last time. He lost.

B. Vihstadt, ex-GOP (supposedly) ran as an independent, and won (but he ran against the streetcar, not the homeless shelter)

C. Audrey Clement, runs as an independent almost every time (but she generally runs to the left of the Dems)

You got that right! I'm a wealthy liberal who vote for Republicans in certain cases. Democrats would be happy if every suburb outside of DC resembles a third world country. My heart is aching as I drive out into some of the suburban communities outside of DC. As DC continues to gentrify, certain elements will be pushed out into the suburbs. I wish all of the suburban communities would push back. Let DC deal with their own mess instead of passing the ball to others. Have you seen some parts of Montgomery and Fairfax Counties lately?
It's an eye opening experience as to what can happened if you allow Democrats too much control.

Troll.

And a racist troll, at that.

NP here. You've played the racist card (right after the troll card).

Care to explain why you've accused someone of racism? Thought the issue here was homelessness in the Courthouse community.

They are our brothers and sisters, our friends and our neighbors. They are mostly not a danger to others, but are endangered themselves. So yes, they belong in our communities.

And therefore, we are going to need you to be more tolerant, Arlington. Can't you see these people are the victims? Not the rich building and housing owners.

Not all homeless commit sexual assaults.

And it's not that bad. The rates used to be a lot higher you know. Stop complaining OK? You all sound extremely privileged.

Mental illnesses sufferers - yes.
Drug addicts - absolutely not, zero tolerance.

I hate to bust this thread right open, but Arlington has only a few hundred homeless people. Every year it goes up or down a few dozen. The current point in time count is 232. The year before it was 174. Two years ago it was 239. This could be for reasons as simple as the weather. It's easy to count the number of people in shelters, but not outside.

In other words, everything is about the same, and the OP's focus on percentages is numerical illiteracy.

Established, generally affluent "places of religion" tend to have at least one multi-purpose room. Common sense would dictate how many adults could sleep there. Rather like a "winter hypothermia shelter for a week" writ large. Altruistic members of the congregation could put their action where their verbiage is by monitoring the room over night. Bottled water and coffee available.

Most churches, etc. tend to have professional kitchens and multiple bathrooms. Some even have a shower or two. The congregation could spring for at least breakfast before setting their guests loose upon the community.

A few of the saner, more enterprising guests could earn some money helping the congregation that took them in with yard work, maintenance and janitorial service. At minimum wage or whatever they in their benevolent but one-sided position of power negotiated with their guests.

"There but for the grace of God go I" would give the congregations the opportunity to put some action behind the glib verbiage.

Would add not one cent to the beleaguered taxpayer.

PTSD'd, substance abusing, mentally ill or recently released from incarceration, those homeless are somebody's sons and daughters.
They aren't bipedal vermin to be dealt with like yesterday's trash. Out of sight, out of mind.

Arise ye, O Arlingtonians, show the rest of us how it should be done.

This is what churches do in DC. There are more churches there than in Arlington.
