Not exactly. For decades, the jurisdictions surrounding DC had their homeless populations kept artificially low by DC's generous programs. This is not taking in DC's population, it is starting to deal with Arlington's own homeless issues. You have a ways to go, though.

nobody in Arlington publicly opposes affordable housing initiatives (which are killing neighborhoods and the over-crowded schools in their zones) or against more homeless shelters.

arlingtonians pride themselves on being liberal, but so many are so naïve and from a place of wealth to begin with that they have absolutely zero idea of the repercussions like those of us few Arlingtonian residents that rose out of poverty and tried to get away from this stuff.

So if the Arlington GOP supports it, its not liberalism, eh? Sounds like there is consensus.

Sounds like you don't live in Arlington. Perhaps you should no longer comment on its politics? Or tell us at least where you do live, so we can discuss the success of that place, and how well it deals with issues of poverty and homelessness.

Sounds like you don't live in Arlington. If you did, you would know there is not a sizable Republican Party, and they would likely not take such a stance. It's a traditionally liberal stronghold, but I wouldn't take that for granted. I hear more people openly saying they don't support affordable housing. The democrats need to listen.

You want to help these people? Bring back the old institutions, it was a mistake to shut them all down. A large number of these people are so far gone that there's no helping them without constant surveillance and care. It's one thing to give them medication and send them on their way but that same medication doesn't do any good when most of these guys don't even bother taking them.

One resident in Montgomery County did just this - took pity on Haddon-Clark and the result was their daughter Laura Houghteling's murder. Not Op but I think what we would all like is that the homeless who are using these shelters abide by the rules and regulations of any society or neighborhood. Would that be too much to ask? We invite you into a community to be a constructive part of it, not to destroy it or harm the residents who already live there. Why aren't there some type of guidelines like no drinking, no drugs, lights out, etc. that anyone using the shelter must comply with? I know, there are these rules, but there is no one to enforce them. That leaves the residents vulnerable. Just not right.

Most of these people have mental health issues. You are making this a moral failings issue when it is a society failing its populace issue.

Jail, which will give them shelter and food, away from the community. They're crime and drug cancers. It's not a human right to walk around high, burglarize homes, commit larceny, defecate in public, sleep on the sidewalk.

How many churches, synagogues, temples and mosques are there in the Peoples' Republic of Arlington? They could step into the breach to solve the problem.

Established, generally affluent "places of religion" tend to have at least one multi-purpose room. Common sense would dictate how many adults could sleep there. Rather like a "winter hypothermia shelter for a week" writ large. Altruistic members of the congregation could put their action where their verbiage is by monitoring the room over night. Bottled water and coffee available.

Most churches, etc. tend to have professional kitchens and multiple bathrooms. Some even have a shower or two. The congregation could spring for at least breakfast before setting their guests loose upon the community.

A few of the saner, more enterprising guests could earn some money helping the congregation that took them in with yard work, maintenance and janitorial service. At minimum wage or whatever they in their benevolent but one-sided position of power negotiated with their guests.

"There but for the grace of God go I" would give the congregations the opportunity to put some action behind the glib verbiage.

Would add not one cent to the beleaguered taxpayer.

PTSD'd, substance abusing, mentally ill or recently released from incarceration, those homeless are somebody's sons and daughters.
They aren't bipedal vermin to be dealt with like yesterday's trash. Out of sight, out of mind.
