I know! We drive to Fredericksburg to play at their branch of the children's museum of Richmond. It's in a strip mall and nothing great, but it's more than we have here for sure.

There's one at National Harbor, but I've heard mostly negative reviews.

It closed more than two years ago. Man you people need to get off the dcum and get on the google. And don't comment on "but I've heard"

Port Discovery Children's Museum in Baltimore is very much still open. I was there with my kids last week. Maybe YOU should google it.

Sorry, PP. I read that as Inner Harbor. The one in Baltimore is nice and worth the drive up there for a change of pace.

Anything remotely good (or really good) has a super steep cover charge and/or gets inundated with people. Which, regardless of how awesome the attraction is, being swamped among so many other people makes it suck. Anything that's not overrun with people is just not that good of an attraction. I think ankor wat in cambodia might be the only thing that we didn't think was overrated, and that was only because we went so long ago that there was almost no one there.

Starting around 8 years ago, we started skipping almost all "attractions" when we travel and now we just explore on our own.

DC is no different.

Ridiculous

Yeah, make sure to skip the Eiffel Tower in Paris and don't go near the Pyramids in Egypt!

What a dumbass.

I skipped the Eiffel Tower in Paris. My favorite memory is having croissants and fresh orange juice in the train station.

DP, but lol- it's funny you mention the Eiffel Tower and Pyramids because IMO those ARE two really overrated destinations. Eiffel Tower- you can see it from MANY different places in the city. Once you actually get there, it's overcrowded and loses the magic pretty quickly. And standing in a line for hours and hours to go up in it is just not something I'd waste my money OR time on.

Pyramids of Egypt...again, iconic, yes, but overrated IMO. Trash everywhere, heckled incessantly by locals to buy their overpriced souvenirs, and a KFC and a Pizza Hut quite literally at the base of the pyramids. I took a three day cruise up the Nile hitting all the temples and places of antiquity afterwards, and that is what Egypt is all about. Pyramids...eh.

Never been to Europe, but I've been to Paris a few times and would never waste time on the Tower.

I disagree. When you get to the Eiffel Tower and you see the scale of it, the majesty of it, right next to you, it is quite impressive. And the view from the top is breathtaking. Waited in line the first time, ate at the restaurant (window table) the second time, and thus got a head start to the top.

Damn. For those of you wondering how you ended up with whiny kids where nothing is good enough or exciting enough for them, look no further than this thread.

This is actually the stupidest thing I have ever seen on this board in my 6 years here.

I think the National Zoo is fine and as many pointed out, it's free. But, it's not as great as ppl make it sound. I'm curious about Maryland Zoo.

I really enjoy the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. You take a tram from the parking lot to where the animals are. The African trail starts on a wooden walkway so you dont feel like your kids can go running off to far. They have giraffes and at certain times you can participate in giraffe feeding which my 4yo thought was the best thing ever. You basically pay an extra $2 ( if i remember correctly) and you get a plant shoot to feed them.
Lots of places to sit down and eat.
There is also a kids trail with a fun bridge, cave, and slide that comes out of a tree,
Barnyard area with goats you can go in with a brush are always a huge hit with my kid too.

yes its more to get in because you pay per person but its 10x better than the DC zoo.

I think Udvar Hazy is even worse. Plus, the parking is such a ripe off. And offering free parking after 4pm? Give me a break? Like I'm going to battle traffic during the weekday to get there after 4pm for free parking?

At least the Air&Space on the mall has buttons to push and some interaction. From what I remember, Udvar had none of that except maybe a flight simulator with a gigantic line of people. No thanks.

My kids love udvar hazy. There are tons of planes and rockets and you can walk right up to them. Paying for parking that far out in the burbs is annoying, but it amounts to $15 for a family outing so it is nbd. If out of principle or financial situation the $15 really makes a difference, it is nice they have the free option after 4, including weekends.

It's sad that people don't seem to appreciate all of the things, many free, we have in the DC area.

Oh, the national mall is soooo boring. Oh, the zoo is sooo boring. Insufferable!

We went to the zoo once and couldn't find any animals. They were all in hiding or sleeping or eating or something. Seriously that's boring.
