Not sure whether OP is a Virginia resident, but you can attend any VCCS school such as NVCC and have guaranteed admission to the likes of UVA and William & Mary provided you take the right courses and maintain a 3.4 GPA.

Thought it was hire than a 3.4, chief.

I know a young man who was rejected from Vandy and is currently at Dartmouth.

Is that the start of a limerick?

I believe that's spelled higher than a 3.4! And yes, it is 3.4 or above. That is for UVA. Other schools with reciprocal agreements may have higher or lower standards. She could also do NVCC and then have a shot at a special Georgetown admissions process too. I'm not going to handhold you and provide a link. I think your tech savvy enough to find these things on your own.

What school system is this? Or is she in private? No responsible college counselor would have recommended this approach.

My niece graduated two years ago from a high school out near Front Royal. I am not very close to her so when she said she was applying to Duke, Stanfied, And Georgetown, I assumed it was because she was a stand out student, I know she played a couple sports in high school as well.

She is currently at a small private liberal arts college in VA that had rolling admissions and that her parents can barely afford. Apparently, the college counselor had encouraged her to apply to thes very top notch schools, even told her she thought the chances were likely, despite the fact that my niece had only one AP class, a GPA of 3.3 and an SAT score that was just a couple numbers above what the lowest average score was at the time. I was blown away and my SIL was pisseed - at the schools for not taking her child!

So not all college counselors/guidance counselors at e high school level are that grade or even really understand the college process.

Good God - how is that kind of ignorance even possible. Then again, we have Cheetolini as POTUS.

Harsh. But again, she had no shot in the early round with an awful SAT.

You do know that when you send scores to schools, they send all scores not just the latest, right? If he scores we're way too low before schools will still see that. Go take PP advice and apply to a school with rolling admission...

How does a kid who gets an awful SAT as recently as the beginning of senior year decide that they are too good for anything but tippy top schools? Even if the score improved, it seems like a reality check was needed.

Penn is taking 900 today at 5pm (1300 ED) with 42,000+ applicants.

Not true. Accepted 2255 RD for ~850 spots.

I know a kid this happened to a couple of years ago. She ended taking a gap year in Spain in some kind of Spanish language program and reapplied to colleges, making sure to include some safeties. She actually got into one of the schools that had rejected her the year before and is doing well.
