Because of the odds of getting one of the very small spots 2-3 times in 3-4 years and the sheer # of non-twin siblings. |
Maybe my neighbor can adopt my kids because this is the 3rd year one of her kids got in--now has 3 there. The rest of us continually get very high waitlist #s. |

It's not a computer generated pick.
It's not one of those lottery ball where a ball with a number randomly pops up. It is a stack of application manually flipped over. My ?--do they shuffle the stack in front of those attending. If not, I am with those crying fixed. |
Yea. It's easy to put them in order when they are brought in for show. Say 4 siblings all at top of pile. Rest random |

Maybe there should be more of a trade off for HB. Like no more going back to the home school for sports and the like.
If it truly is part of the answer to overcrowding and the education is so superior, it is only fair. You want HB for your snowflake? Fine, but they don't get to crowd out kids at their base school for extra curriculars. |
This is all just total lies. It is a program; kids graduate from their home high schools which can be any of the three. The total annual budget for H-B is developed using the same planning factors as all middle and high schools in Arlington. See pages 314-315 of the FY2017 budget book. Projected FY2017 enrollment of 679 students, budget of $8,636,618, for per student cost of $12,719. That is about the same as the three comprehensive high schools (slightly higher because some of the highest paid staff, like the principal/assistant principals, librarian, nurse etc, are spread across fewer students). http://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Budget_FY2017_Adopted_Final_ForWeb-updated.pdf |
I assume you want this policy to apply to Arlington Tech as well... |
Yep. |
I will add that I'm concerned that arlington tech is going to severely impact Wakefield. I know many south Arlington parents looking to send kids there. I wonder if it's so popular for Yorktown... |
Agree. That completely sucks for base school students. Why does Arlington even have these schools or why can't they make them the same size as the others? |
192 kids transferred to Wakefield and 315 to Washington Lee, which is more kids than are in high school at HB. Last year 484 kids total transferred among the 3 comprehensive high schools. And those kids attend their transfer schools full time and are more likely to participate in extracurriculars than HB kids, who have to take a bus across town. How is that fair to the kids at the base school, for whom it is the neighborhood school? Why does Arlington allow all these transfers? |
Most HB students drive or are driven by parents/chauffeurs/nannies. The buses are almost always nearly empty. |
You are talking about shuffling kids around right? It's not like those kids would otherwise be attending school outside of APS. Total false equivalence. Those kids are attending that school full time. They aren't double dipping. |
This is my guess as to how it goes down. The applications are stacked in a certain order. |
You can guess all you want. I doubt they will ever let anyone know what the process is. Don't forget that there are starting to be "legacy" HB families now, which probably counts in favor of getting in (that is, if you haven't fallen out of favor with the powers that be/Arlington cabal/Illuminati). |
