You are absolutely right. I've been thinking about this, too. I have let my 3yo snack in the car, and I have let her snack alone while I quickly ran upstairs to change a diaper, etc. This is a good reminder to slow down, stay safe, and focus only on eating and drinking when we are eating and drinking. It is a tragedy, and just absolutely horrible. I am so sorry for the family, the daycare staff, the families at the daycare...but I will honor the life of this little one by renewing my commitment to care and safety. |
You are completely right! |
Agreed. We don't allow eating while we're in the car driving. Our center uses Good Food and no meatballs on our menu. Good idea of the PP to talk to center director, I will do the same next week.
I can't even imagine the pain and agony the family is going through. Terrible tragedy. |
I have two friends with children here. I've heard nothing but amazing things. Please think of how hard this must be on the staff there. |
+2, well said! |
To the poster who was shocked that there were only 2 teachers for 13 kids.... This is totally within DC child care center ratio, which is 1 to 10 for 2.5-3 year olds and 1 to 8 for 2-2.5 year olds. |
For 2-2.5 year olds the ratio is 1 to 4. For 2.5-3 year olds it's 1 to 8. AGE OF CHILDREN ADULT-TO-CHILD RATIO MAXIMUM SIZE OF GROUP 0 - 24 months 1:4 8 24 - 30 months 1:4 12 30 months - 48 months 1:8 16 48 months – 60 months years 1:10 20 |
Good luck finding a daycare without any accidents. |
I doubt it would have mattered. First - chocking can be silent so it may have taken a few minutes for it to register with a teacher and even the other kids that something happened, Another issue is that learning the hemlich maneuver in a classroom on a dummy and then actually performing it correctly and with success in a panic situation are two different things, I doubt my ability to do it and have had CPR training many times. You don't actually practice the maneuver enough and it is possible to do it wrong and produce no result, |
We desperately need to find someone to blame because it helps us with our own fear. To acknowledge that some things are out of our control can be terrifying. The reality is that sometimes really bad things happen to kids, even when we do everything right. |
So true. I hope his family is healing. I can't imagine their loss. |
So many people on this Board are just sad, disgusting human beings. Keep your uninformed, judgmental ideas to yourself. To clear some things up: (1) I have a toddler in DOL currently and have spoken with staff about what happened (2) There were multiple teachers in the room (I've never seen a room without at least two teachers in it), (3) the heimlech and cpr were applied by staff, without success, (4) paramedics arrived, and were still unable to revive the child, (5) the grandmother, not the parents, has been giving interviews to everyone, and she is obviously grieving, but knows nothing about what actually happened, (6) the mother is devastated and hasn't said a word to the media yet, (7) the staff is devastated. I'm very happy with DOL, and we are all sad. For the people who made baseless accusations against the daycare, FOAD! |
Nothing mentioned was disgusting or judgemental. Everyone said how shocked and sad they were. |
x 2. You're a bit defensive PP |
We can give the PP a little room to be defensive and upset. She is part of a grieving community. I am so sorry for your loss, PP. It is a loss in a community that is very important to you and your family. My prayers are with everyone affected by this terrible tragedy. |
