Don't take my word for it--Google it: "Chinese", "rude", "pushy" You may also want to add "2008 Olympics" for good measure. The Chinese government actually had drills to teach the Chinese how to line up during Olympic events without pushing each other out the way. Listen, I'm merely responding to the previous poster's attempt to make it seem that the Chinese are paragons of good manners and politeness. In my experience, it's simply not true. I have nothing against Chinese people. China is an enormous country, and of course there are many polite Chinese people. However, my experience with Chinese pushiness has been quite consistent, and many others who have actually traveled to China know of what I speak. Perhaps your experience will be different. |
No immersion school gets more hate on DCUM than Oyster. Now that's an unfortunate fact. |
I am not at any of these schools so my unbiased opinion on hate in this forum in order is: 1st YY 2nd MV (usually aftercare prices/pricing out low income, playground, safety) 3rd tie CMI, Lee 5th Basis I don't think Stokes or Oyster is top 5. |
Stokes was cited as a school with best retention. It gets very little hate. DCI is probably 6th. |

However, I think PP was trying to say that Stokes had the best retention, CMI the 2nd best, and YY the third. I don't know where this data lives, so I don't know whether it is true. But I think that's what he/she was asserting. |
Thanks for this explanation. LEA - law enforcement agency? OK, so single lotteries for admission to charters are not in force nationwide - some states support them statewide, others not. This arrangement must explain why the Mandarin immersion charter in Amherst MA, where I attend college, openly recruits dialect-speaking kids from around Western MA (you see ads on public buses). When I visited the school during a reunion weekend, I was impressed by how many native speakers there appeared to be at a charter in an area where Chinese immigrants are even thinner on the ground than in DC. I was also impressed by well the non-heritage upper grades kids could speak Chinese. Does the charter law prohibiting any barriers to entry that is specific to DC mean that the city council, mayor, DCPC and OSSE lack tools at their disposal to enable DC language immersion charters to legally set up the sort of language dominant lotteries DCPS supports? It sounds like Congress would have to amend the law to take away the right for each DC charter to be able to decide its own LEA for this to happen. Is that right? I remember reading that YY's admins had asked DCPC to accord them flexibility to recruit more native speakers at one point, maybe five years ago, but were denied. I can't remember if they were asking for a Chinese dominant lottery, or the right to replace drop-outs with native speakers (as in MoCo), but there was some sort of request that went nowhere. There must already be a modicum of flexibility in DC charter admissions though, since charters can elect to aside seats for the children of teachers and staff (seats not open to all who wish to enroll). Washington Latin has started doing this, somewhat controversially. The YY situation is somewhat unfortunate, because the language acquisition resources of the small native speaking community in town are largely squandered in serving the kids. The Amherst approach would work better, with the school growing to serve both more true heritage speakers and others (like Mundo Verde has in the last couple of years). I hope that parents and admins aren't done pulling political levers to try to change the admissions arrangement, even if this would alienate parents eager to keep Tiger parents out. |

LEA is Local Education Agency - essentially its own school district so the school must accommodate anyone who gets through the lottery (unlike DCPS which can send you to a different school for different, particular need).
The term LEA is often referred to in special education/ in IEPs. DCPS, as you may know, has a crappy record with special education (to say the least). So joining all charters into one LEA would take away charters' abilities to administer their own special ed programs. And as a parent of a kid with an IEP at an immersion charter, I would fight tooth and nail against that. Don't want to be part of DCPS/ OSSE-wide special ed. |
I lived in Hong Kong (which the fact you just lumped in with the rest of China shows your ignorance about all things Chinese) and have to say, I disagree. But maybe, get out of the cities. Also what you define as "rude" is just a cultural norm. Not waiting in line? In some cultures you would be seen as rude for not pushing forward to get the food (or item first). Also, I think the poster just said Chinese = polite, you tend to exaggerate a bit what her post reflected. |
"It's called being Chinese = exceedingly polite." A hit dog will holler. MY EXPERIENCE is that many Chinese people living in China are very rude and (literally) pushy. Get over it! |

This is the key. My family is new to DC and all of these parents were telling us to lottery for YY. I had tons of questions about how to support the language outside of school when we had no native-speaking friends in the area. They continually glossed over this point and kept stressing how language school are one way to self-select similar MC families. I could not rank YY knowing we did not have the cultural community we had in California to support the language. |

This is not considered rude in China. Don't push (see what I did there) your western, white person cultural norms on them. |
