NP -- OP didn't ask if there is a school where no one supplements. There is no chance that such a school exists in the greater DC area. LOL. And that is fine-- parents' prerogative. But OP wants to know if it is possible to go to a DCPS school and have your child achieve an advanced track without the need to supplement. It is. We don't supplement either. No need to. Kids scored 5s on PARCC and are in the advanced track at Deal with no extra supplements or tutors. |

I have an DC multiple grade levels advanced in math and ELA, and thriving in DCPS (not in Wilson feeder, Brent or Ross). No supplemental tutoring and sufficiently challenge in school.
We try to let DC be a kid. good luck to the tiger moms out there. The uber competitiveness for young children is a little frightening. |
PP ^^ also instinctive learners find their own challenge and build on innate curiosity. They don't need it force-fed, especially at a highly formative age. |
Why are people here so scary? It's not like they're good at their own jobs. |

I mean, can you imagine the level of insecurity?
"You mustn't mention Kumon at school,Larla. Ever." "Pourquoi pas, Mama? Is learning and enrichment shameful?" "No, poppet! But we don't want to hand anything to anyone else. Let them do their own work!" All seriousness: am I just coming from a position of massive privilege or ignorance that I don't understand your thinking at all? Was everything handed to me too easily? |

Yes! this is the question. It sounds like there are places in DCPS where it is possible to achieve an advanced track without the need to supplement. Great! Wonderful! I'd like to go to these open houses. Can people please start identifying these schools? Thanks. |
Looks like the asian insanity is starting to bleed over into insecure white folks. It's not just DC. Look at the AAP insanity at Fairfax County. I am doing well in life and I went to a normal gasp elementary school. What are you supplementing for again exactly? Special snowflake can skip a grade? Fear of being left behind. Here is a hint if your end goal is going to an elite college academics are a dime a dozen. It's what you do outside of academics that makes a difference. Chew on that for a while. |
hey - don't stereotype all us white folks. I agree in calling out some of this insanity which is deeply rooted in insecurity. |
Totally! That pp was confusing. I seriously hope she was joking. If she were entrepreneurial, she should have tried to sell her coveted supplementation packages. |

I have 3 kids at Janney. Been in the school community for 7 years. I don't know anyone who supplements. I know about 10 kids who have tutors to keep up with the regular curriculum (i.e. because they are struggling with math or reading). No-one I know supplements to "get ahead" or because their child is bored.
I do know about 50 kids in travel sports and many more who spend hours and hours honing other skills such as swimming or ballet. I feel like I know a ton of parents really well because my kids have been in the school for years and I've made many lifelong friends so I think I have a very good idea of what the social norm is. Plus my kids each have a half dozen really close friends. I know those kids' whereabouts about as well as I know my own. None of them go to supplemental classes. |

Interesting on the sports supplements
I'll bash that too. You know the chances of your snowflake actually being a professional in any of that are about the same as getting into an elite college lol Or wait maybe that's your golden ticket into the elite college Seriously who are all you people No wonder this area is so jacked up its made up of ghetto idiots and helicoptoring freaks I know why all the normal people leave after a few years |
I think most paretns know their kids aren't going pro and don't want them to anyway. But I also am going to expect my DD to participate in some sports because 1) every one needs to exercise 2) team sports teach great skills and discipline and 3) setting an expection of lifelong exercise habits and 4) kids need to be challenged. I think all kids need some basic athletic skills. I know grown ups who don't know how to ride bikes or swim and that is pathetic. |
I can disagree with the angst of getting ahead academically and still feel that it's other people's business how to spend their time and/or money. Seriously -- WTFRU? |

Eliot Hine is the feeder, but the schools are as different as possible. Almost no Maury kids end up there. |
