Now the complain is that not enough TJ grads attend SLACs? What happened to the complain that too many kids NOT interested in STEM are attending TJ just for the name?

Those schools are expensive and most TJ families probably don't qualify for financial aid, but can't put down 60 K either. They also don't give merit aid either.

Isn't W&M considered SLAC?

No, it's actually lumped in with National Universities for USN&WR.

+100.

Some people can't stand other kids are receiving great education and succeeding while their kids are not.

So, not going to TJ = getting a subpar education and not succeeding? Maybe I should have set my DD out to pasture when she got a mediocre score on the IAAT in 6th grade.

I think the TJ list is quite impressive with only one or two head scratchers (little puzzled about Oklahoma).

The University of Oklahoma courts National Merit Sholars and gives them not only great aid, but specialized attention in the honors program.

No. I made the comment about SLACs in response to the pp who said the TJ grads were going to all kinds of different schools. Not really. Hardly any of them went for the SLAc. No offense was meant.

Interesting thing, the SLAC issue - from naviance, in 2015 and 2014, 12 students applied to Williams, only 1 admitted each year. The 2015 admitted student accepted. The 2014 student did not. Before that, it was more like 14 students applied and 4 were admitted, and sometimes zero accepted. So it seems like Williams decided that TJ applicants were low yield and probably ratcheted down admissions accordingly.

Very few people head to SLACs. Most kids aren't interested in paying $$$ to attend a school with an extremely limited #of degrees and with a smaller student body than most high schools.

Michigan matriculation number went down significantly. Typically, it was about 53 acceptances with about 26 enrollment but it went down to 11 enrollments.

Meantime, Berkeley matriculation number went up significantly. it was usually about 16 acceptances with about 6-7 enrollment but the number went up to 12 enrollment this year.

Really? Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Bowdoin, Middlebury -- all really unpopular? Not with grads of many privates, and dare I say, "top tier" privates?

I think it is more of a finance issue. Many of these schools do not give out merit aid which many TJ students would need to attend these schools as many students probably don't qualify for FA. Also SLACs don't hold a lot of sway in the VA publics. The higher SES ones send grads to these schools, but not the numbers you would get NE public schools. As for private schools, most people who go to SLACs from those schools have $$$$.

After reading all the responses, I can't figure out if people are happy about the TJ college list or not (haters). I am from out of state and just lurk here so I had to look up TJHS because I had never heard of it. It's a magnet school, you had to take a test to get in so the kids students are going to be smart = good school acceptances.

Plus they are SLACs, and TJ is a STEM school. Sure a few TJ kids go hardcore liberal arts in college, but that is not the norm.

You mean most TJ kids? It's a STEM school so I would expect them to steer away from the Liberal Arts colleges. That certainly doesn't mean "very few people have ever heard of them." Those who are in-the-know, know.

Many people bash the school even though it is considered the "best" high school in the country with the highest average SAT score, highest number of NMSF, great facilities, good teachers, good college placements etc. since Asians make up about 68% of the students.
