It could be that he had multiple motivations or as simple as "I am an Islamic soldier" sounding better to him than "I am a closeted gay man who feels used".

Gay or not, doesn't matter. What matters is that 49 are dead and the FBI have uncovered further connections. Furthermore, the FBI dismissed him, despite 'see something, say something' from multiple sources.

Which, by the way, doesn't always bear out. That guy who killed the two NYC cops - it was not terrorism. He had other issues, specifically mental health issues. Same thing re: the recent Walmart incident. Not terrorism. No trail to nests, no terrorism.

sorry- then they are not devout Muslims. islam is primarily a faith about developing a spiritual relationship with God, Alah is always watching a DEVOUT Muslim doesn't care about family or whatever. The Muslims you know are practicing Muslims, not devout. Devout means someone who is devoted to the principles of their religion and someone who secretly drinks is not devoted to the obedience of Allah's commands. there are some Muslim sects who are ok with drinking but it is not secret or hidden- they believe the prohibition is on intoxication not intoxicants. So yeah your friends are bad at bending to the will of Allah (the definition of Muslims is one who bends to the will of Allah)

The present cross-sectional study was done in order to illustrate the prevalence and types of consanguineous marriages among Afghanistan populations. Data on types of marriages were collected using a simple questionnaire. The total number of couples in the study was 7140 from the following provinces: Badakhshan, Baghlan, Balkh, Bamyan, Kabul, Kunduz, Samangan and Takhar. Consanguineous marriages were classified by the degree of relationship between couples: double first cousins, first cousins, first cousins once removed, second cousins and beyond second cousins. The coefficient of inbreeding (F) was calculated for each couple and the mean coefficient of inbreeding (?) estimated for each population. The proportion of consanguineous marriages in the country was 46.2%, ranging from 38.2% in Kabul province to 51.2% in Bamyan province. The equivalent mean inbreeding coefficient (?) was 0.0277, and ranged from 0.0221 to 0.0293 in these two regions. There were significant differences between provinces for frequencies of different types of marriages (p<0.001). First cousin marriages (27.8%) were the most common type of consanguineous marriages, followed by double first cousin (6.9%), second cousin (5.8%), beyond second cousin (3.9%) and first cousin once removed (1.8%). There were significant differences between ethnic groups for the types of marriages (?2=177.6, df=25, p<0.001). Tajiks (Soni) and Turkmens (also Pashtuns) showed the lowest (?=0.0250) and highest (?=0.0297) mean inbreeding coefficients, respectively, among the ethnic groups in Afghanistan. The study shows that Afghanistan's populations, like other Islamic populations, have a high level of consanguinity.

PP here. I know an Afghan woman who was forced to marry her first cousin here in the US. I don't think it's legal here and I don't know how they were able to do it, but they did. And her brother was schizophrenic.

Almost half of marriages in Afghanistan are first cousins. Shockingly, seven percent are double first cousins (parents of bride and groom were brothers married to sisters).

Its not illegal here in most states. Also this is not an excuse- this guy was a murderous horrible person who used whatever ideology her needed to kill people and ISIS is a very hateful and frightening ideology to latch onto. British people married their first cousins until like after the second world war. Lets not reach so far to make this guy a victim of circumstance

The worst homophobes in our culture are religious gay men who can't accept their sexuality. They are raised on religion that teaches them that their sexuality is evil and that they are evil because of it. They want to remain in their faith but they want to be with other men. It creates a tremendous amount of cognitive dissonance that is acted out in extremely violent or hateful ways.

Oops, I didn't realize this already had been discussed. I'm so curious why on earth the press isn't all over this news. I mean, they (and I mean, honestly Fox) was obsessed, and I mean OBSESSED with the ISIS angle, as was a certain GOP candidate, that they spun the story around and around and around... Inviting guests over to argue, essentially, that the Obama administration was ignoring the ISIS threat, had no plan, needed to get tough (meaning: more military intervention), was pussy-footing around calling this guy a "Muslim extremist" because they were too PC, and on and on and on. So much gooddamn garbage.

I, personally, think that this guy was, like many other people who commit mass shootings, angry about lots of things, selfish, liked violence, pursued violence, had easy access to weapons of mass killing, and found a way kill a bunch of people in a fit of rage.
